  • Tell Dak and his agent that Dak is a game manager and that’s fine because that’s what we want, so we have to pay you like one.

  • Make them aware that he needs a strong supporting cast to be successful and his pay rate has to reflect that.

  • Make them aware that those 5 million dollars of endorsements he receives yearly only come as a Dallas Cowboy. They could rise to 10 million a year if this team wins a Superbowl.

  • Tell them to sign the 4 year extension worth 80 million/42 million guaranteed because that is a more than fair offer or leave town in 2020 and gamble in free agency. They will be lucky to get 3 or 4 million more per season. On the flipside, they may only be offered deals in the 15 million range or even less with very little in endorsement opportunities.

  • Tell them that the 4 year extension will allow him to cash in on a second extension earlier if his play improves (while allowing the front office to also cut him after 2 seasons if his play doesn't improve, but leave that part out. Have to look out for the franchise as a whole. Sorry Dak).

  • Tell them to be realistic and take the for sure money. There is something special brewing in Dallas with the outlook of this young defense and he would be a fool not to be a part of it.

2019 Cap Hit $6m (5.1 million more than his 2019 cap hit of 720k)
2020 Cap Hit $13m (about 13 million less than franchising him this season. If he plateaus or declines in play use a 1st round pick on a QB in the 2021 draft)
2021 Cap Hit $19m (Bargain compared to most starting QB averages in the next couple of seasons)
2022 Cap Hit $19m (Can be cut with only 5 million in dead money and 14 million in cap savings)
2023 Cap Hit $20m (Can be cut with 0 dead money and 20 million in cap savings)

Logic goes out the window when you are talking about signing a starting caliber QB in the NFL....as much as he gets crap for it, Dak knows he is a starting level QB in the NFL and will be paid as such either in Dallas or elsewhere.....i think the wildcard here is the second bullet point about the supporting cast....knowing what we do of Dak, he may be willing to take a little less so that he can have others around him...he strikes me as that type of leader but what do i know....

Dak is under contract for the 2019 season. $720,000 to be exact. The team has more pressing contracts than Dak's contract. D-Law, Byron Jones and many others need to be solidified before Dak's Prescott. After all of the players are signed then address Dak's. Make him an offer that is team friendly and wait. He can sign it or not. If he has a solid 2019 season, elevate the offer. The Cowboys can use the franchise tag if the need arises. Dallas will pay the going rate. Dak will establish that rate. Dallas should package a group of players that are assets to Dak's sucess. Dak is a smart man that will win a Superbowl. He knows that he can't overvalue himself like Aaron Rodgers then have the team crumble around him

Don't discount what Dak has done. He has more wins since he came into the league than most of the Qbs in the league. I think that only Brady and maybe Brees has more. Dak is worth every penny he gets. Jerry is a smart business man and knows the value of what is at stake.

Here are the players that are UFA https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/dallas-cowboys/

Amari Cooper's contract is looming as well. He needs an extension prior to Dak.

Yes, but if he signs the extension his cap hit could rise to lessen future years cap hits. He's playing for basically nothing compared to starting QBs salaries so may as well jump his cap hit a bit.

Agent:
  • He plays in a 90’s Scheme.
  • Despite getting sacked 50+ times, he’s still healthy and he’s above .500
  • His QB coach got benched by him.
  • He barely got a real #1 receiver midway thru the season and now he turned it around and made the playoffs.
  • Show me the money!!!

A lot of people simply will not admit it, and certainly don't like it, but whenever Dak is resigned he will get at least $25 million a year because that is what the "next quarterback" will get. He plays (and starts) at a position that is highly valued by EVERY franchise. If it should be so highly valued is a completely different discussion.

Always remember one absolute...regardless of the industry/profession; Absolutely nobody is paid what they are worth. Rather they are paid what the market has set as the rate for people who have the skill set to fill that particular position in the organization. That is true for left-handed pitchers with great command and a 100+ fastball, NFL quarterbacks, Fortune 500 CEOs, bean counters and burger flippers.

Rock solid counter argument to OP.

FO response: You play your 4th year for under 1 mil and we can string you along with the franchise tag for 2 more years.

I agree 100% with OP and hope those dollar figures are where we end up. Can never be sure with Jerry.

I want it on record, i am ok with Dak if a new coach was being brougth in. I also am for keeping im if Garrett brings in a new QB coach and fires the current and KM. I would prefer Dallas wait if tey want to move past Dak, but id rather keep him compared to whats out there. Unless we botch 19 so well we know we are getting a good draft pick, tahn take his replacement.

I think it takes more than that, like 5 years on the contract. But I definitely think a deal gets done, but with more incentives than you outline. The issue for Dak is that he is set for life the minute he signs, while playing on his 700K contract next year could mean he gets hurt and never sees another dime.

Also if you look at the way Jerry has done previous high profile contracts, if he is talking the way he is right now I think both sides have a general agreement in place. It will take some time to get the details in line but I don't think the two sides are far apart if Jerry acts like its a done deal already.

But if you do that it still takes up 60 Million in cap space over the next three years. Doing the extension gives you more flexibility and you can build in incentives and out clauses.

Yup that’s the way you get a player to negotiate. Insult him and minimize him. Lol you people are crazier then SAS thinks. The reason he will make 20mil AVA is because that’s where the market is for a starting QB. Look at what’s happened in Pittsburgh when a team insults a player.

FO:
  • He has the best rusher in the league with Zeke
  • He has a decent Oline
  • Half of those 50 sacks are due to him holding onto the ball for too long because he doesn't anticipate receivers getting open
  • He needs a #1 receiver in order to be successful so his pay should be lowered so that a #1 receiver could be afforded
  • Don't be greedy and take the life changing money.

Dak is gonna get paid! Like it or not

He might but doesn't mean it has to be from us. The real problem here is that agents make there money up front so they are not interested in setting up deals where payment is contingent on a prove it type deal, unless said player is at a stage in their careers where they aren't betting a better offer. We don't know what Dak will get offered and that may not have anything to do with what he is actually worth.

I was thinking more along the lines of----

"Here's what a good backup is paid in today's NFL. That's what we're offering you because we are about to sign Nick Foles and you'll be carrying his clipboard next year. If that doesn't suit you, there's the door. Dak, please make sure it doesn't hit you in the arse on your way out. We wouldn't want your head to get jammed any further up there than it already is. Thanks."
