If that's the case then how come all the years Rodgers has played in the NFL he has been to 1 superbowl. If anybody can win a superbowl with Rodgers why is it he has been in only 1 more superbowl than the Cowboys in 26 years.

It is going to be a 43. They will just not run the same base 43 every play... thus they’ll be multiple.

On one snap Quinn may play a 4-3 under where Watkins is a 2-gap 4T DE with DLaw at LEO, and Woods as a 2-gap 1-tech and Gallimore as the 3T.

And on the next use a 4-3 over with Urban as a 6-tech 2-gap DE, a 3T, a 2-gap NT and Gregory as the LEO.

Then the next play use a more traditional 4-3 with DLaw at SDE and Gregory at WDE with two pass rushing 3-tech’s.

In Seattle, they would occasionally change up to what was essentially a 3-4 look with a NT and two 3T’s down and the LEO and the SAM ‘backer up on the line as wide-9’s in a two point stance... but they didn’t do that too often.

Those are really all 4-3 defenses except for the rarely used 3-4 Bear front.

They’ll do different things with the LB’s and DB based on what sub-package they’re using and Quinn is getting some specialized guys like Neal who he will use in different ways.

All of these will fit Dallas’ 43 personnel but will keep defenses guessing as to what is coming... which is nothing but a positive for the defense. Remember Marinelli’s defense where offenses said they knew exactly what the defense was going to do? Yeah, that won’t happen under Quinn.

I don’t expect the same breakdowns and fundamental errors that happened under Nolan. I don’t really know what happened but the players just didn’t mesh with Nolan at all. Quinn shouldn’t have those issues. He’s known as a great teacher and getting the best out of his guys. He has the skins on the wall and should have the respect of the players. He’ll get them playing in the 4-3 they know and then implement some of the other stuff as they go through the season.

Running a 43 that has some different looks is exactly what the defense needs and should be way better than Marinelli’s 1990 scheme.

In short, stop freaking out and let Quinn do his thing.

McCarthy sounds like bum who doesn’t want to anything to improve the team and run the same poo so he can collect that pay check. The previous rumors from Green Bay day seems to confirm that he is in fact a lazy bum coach.

I live in Green Bay and there might have been a couple of disgruntled fans that said that about McCarthy just like there are disgruntled fans that whine about anything and everything. The paper here didn't run any articles where he has referred to as a lazy bum coach by any of the sportswriters or quoting anyone in the organization saying that. Because you don't like McCarthy you've completely exaggerated a made up something to make it sound like your dislike has other approval. Yes McCarthy has done some things that I'm not crazy about but then just about every coach has done and do that too. Example of good coaches that do some bad things at times. How about Pete Carol in Super Bowl XLIX with the ball on the patriot's 1 yard line and instead of running the ball with Lynch on 2nd down he calls a pass that gets picked and ended any chance of Seattle winning.

If fat/ lazy McCarthy really wants to maximize the skill set of current core players on this roster as stated on the press conference, then they really need to run 4-3. He needs to keep his oversized self on the offensive side and work on improving the OL and let Quinn handle the defense.

It seems like Quinn is a big part of what is gong on with the D. Whether you like McCarthy or not is irrelevant here, McCarthy does expects his DC to run the D. He made a bad decision with Nolan and now we will see what Quinn can do.

Agreed but the OP took a rather strange approach. Quinn signed a 3-year deal and MM has 4 years remaining yet many players Dallas signed were only given 1 year deals so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I am a fan of one year deals to plug holes as long as there is a plan to bring young players in to compete for those positions and try to avoid extending a dude off the street on a one year deal who is what he is.

Dan Quinn will have a big say, but listening to the press conference yesterday it will be the same philosophy as last season. Draft/Sign players that can play different positions across the line and mix and match the fronts to showcase this when needed.

This will be a hybrid DEF still.

The Cowboys had a "hybrid" defense in 2003, Parcel's first season. They didn't have time to convert the team to a 3-4 so Parcel's ran a 4-3 with certain 3-4 attributes, like puting a D- lineman in pass coverage and using a "surprise" pass rusher.

That season every defensive starter but one had at least one sack.

However, the most bizarre element of that defense was that they had the best defensive combined ranking in yardage and scoring in Cowboy history. They were ranked #1 in yards and #2 in points that season.

Although the Cowboy defenses were famous, especially against the run, neither Landry or Johnson produced a higher ranked defense the the Cowboys using that hybrid defense in 2003.

The 1993 Cowboys didn't use a hybrid defense, just a 4-3 defense and ended up ranked #2 in both rushing and passing and they were also 3rd in the league in sacks and the strangest thing about that was not a single defensive player was voted to nor went to the Pro Bowl. Then the Pro Bowl was played after the Super Bowl. Now some of what you're calling a hybrid defense really isn't a hybrid defense. A team that uses a "hybrid" defense is a team that sometimes lines up as a 4-3 and sometimes as a 3-4 defense. When a team changes up their blitz package on who rushes and who drops in coverage is just that a blitz package not a hybrid defense. If that's a hybrid defense then EVERY team runs a hybrid defense because EVERY team at times changes up their normal blitz package to throw off the offense.and teams have done this going all the way back to the 1960's.
