I actually think the Cowboys have become less creative on draft day and therefore less dynamic

I'm not making up the scenario though. I'm responding to something that actually happened. Stephen called the Ravens and wanted to trade down.

Yes, for their first and third. The Ravens balked at that, telling us that Dallas could not get what it wanted. The Ravens could have easily sweetened the pot if they were so inclined, but they didn't.

These GMs and coaches know each other and understand when they can sell high. For Dallas, what it would have gotten from the Ravens was not worth possibly losing Elliott or Ramsey.

I agree with that since Elliott and Ramsey were the only top-tier players left, unless you include Tunsil.

I get not trading down for Zeke in fear of Jacksonville repaying us for screwing them out of,the player they wanted.

What I don't get is selecting Jaylon Smith at 34.

Even if you just had to have him in the 2nd then move back and then go get him.

Pretty sure we tried.

I don't think it's a lack of creativity hurting our drafting. I think we don't value picks enough. We place too much emphasis on our scouting being "right" without having any way to know and we swing for the fences on goofy projects or we trade away premium picks because we're confident we've found another Hall of Famer. And then it's "Oops, well, the Patriots or somebody would have drafted that bust if we hadn't." Our most successful drafts have tended to come from either acquiring extra premium picks or staying put and not getting cute.
