I am becoming more and more convinced the Cowboys draft a QB

Sadly too many are already setting themselves in stone to belittle the pick unless it is the pick they want and I doubt much will change their minds
I think the pitchforks will be out and for a different reason. Both fans who follow the draft closely, or from a distance think there are 2 QBs worth the 4th pick. At least a good portion believe this. I also think a good portion of them would understand if the Cowboys appeared open minded to the idea of taking one, but passed because of grade.

Jerry's comments are the real driving force behind a lot of the angst towards this decision. He has given the perception that it doesn't matter how high of a grade they have on that QB, they are not an option at 4. That is unequivocally a mistake. I don't care how it turns out 5 years from now. They are being dismissive of the most premium position on the field because Romo is here for 5 more years.

Now maybe Jerry is blowing smoke, but the only thing we have to go on is its not even a consideration. The way they reach the decision on the 4th pick is more troubling to a lot of fans here. You have to trust your scouts, so if they say no, so be it. If they say yes and the decision makers say no, it just shows deeper organizational problems in my eyes.

Jerry has seemed adamant.

However Stephen has said this about the idea of drafting a franchise QB at 4...

"I mean you have to look at it," Jones said. "You’re not naive to it but if you have the opportunity in this league, in our situation, to get a potential franchise quarterback, then you have to make the investment. You have to have the patience. You sacrifice maybe that opportunity that maybe is impactful right now."

I agree we are going to draft a QB. My fear is that we will outsmart ourselves by not taking Wentz, Goff or Lynch somewhere in the first. None of these will be there at #34.

I have read too many folks who are more knowledgeable that me ( they watch college FB ) who say Prescott is not a NFL caliber QB. More seem to doubt him than support him. I have little faith our staff can develop a marginal QB into a solid NFL QB.

And that's the perception that we will be stuck with. Maybe they are doing due diligence on them and just don't like them, but Jerry's comments have given more than enough cause to doubt that.

I think it's more likely that we'd trade up for Paxton from the 2nd round vs. taking Goff at #4.

I'm not including Wentz as I'm about 98% confident that he's going to CLE.

I have no qualms about taking a QB. None. My issue is the development. There is no reason, absolutely no reason, to think this coaching staff can get whomever we draft to the level necessary to take this team forward. Wade Wilson needs to be shown the door. Period. Also, if we do use a pick on QB, I want the rest of the picks in the first 4 rounds spent on defense unless the value for the offensive player is too great to ignore.

Will be taking a QB at some point with the first few picks. They have certainly shown more interest in prospects then they have in quite some time. That makes me happy. But I am still not convinced they are going to do what I believe they should, which is take one of the top two guys at #4 if they believe he is a franchise guy. I believe they are thinking Moore as the #2 and a rookie as the #3 guy. Maybe they bring in a veteran guy to compete for training camp after the draft.

I think they will too but unless it's Wentz or Goff then it will probably be a waste of a draft pick.

This draft is filled with a bunch of potential backup types but we need a vet or a heir apparent and not some long term project that will never be the franchise anyways.

One of the reasons why i want the top QB is even Wade wilson cant screw it up,that guy has failed with so many QBs but he seems to be a lifetime appointment.

Really don't even want Goff, the dropoff is too much.
Lets look at Oregons QB Vernon Adams, who transferred from FCS level (Wentz) school Eastern Wash Univ to play at Oregon his senior season. Adams lead the nation in QB efficiency ratings with a 179.1% fresh out of FCS level of play (Wentz's level)....went 7-2 in the Pac10, 9-4 overall and with 2 tight losses to FBS championship contenders Mich State and TCU.

Both were in a "system" spread offense, are both products of the simplicity of the spread offense? If not, why can Adams transfer from FCS level, perform very well, notch 9 wins and 2 very competitive games vrs. FBS championship caliber teams................and yet we knock the heck out of Wentz for "lower level" of compeititon.....all the while a FCS transfer glides into the same conference as Goff and does very well against FBS level competition. While in the FCS level, Adams was unable to venture deep into any playoff levels. And vice versa Goff was only able to notch 14 wins in 3 years in the same Conference.
****
summary---the dropoff from FBS to FCS isn't the deep chasm that all players face jumping to the NFL.

tell me if I'm all wet......:)

Here is Jerry's thinking in a nut shell, Manning won a SB at age 38, so he thinks Romo can do the same. If Cam had won the SB, Jerry would be flying the scouts and coaching staff around to follow Cardale Jones and then select him in the second round to be the next Cam.

Jerry, of course, fails to see that the Broncos went all in on defense, getting the top FA's to build a championship defense to help Manning. Jerry picked up Thornton, Elmer Fudd, and Scooby Doo, because they were cheap deals. You need talented players, not cheap FA's that no other team looked at, to win. It's always reactionary the Jerry.

It's hard to tell what the Cowboys are thinking. Are they all in to get Tony a ring? If they are, they should have gone all in and signed the best FAs available and they didn't. Are they building for the future? If so, they should take the QB with the 4th pick, develop him under Romo and be set for the next 10 years. They also can't afford to be drafting the same positions every year. Last year they got the CB and DE, this year they should target another area, and next year another.

If we are at 4 and Wentz and or Goff is there and we take them (whichever is there) it could turn out to be a mistake that sets this franchise back for years if they are not the QB they hope he is (whoever he is).

If we are at 4 and one or both are there and we don't take them, they could turn out to be franchise players and we will regret it.

If we pass but get a good QB later that pans out we will forget about this whole situation and be happy with who we got.

IF we don't and that other QB turns out great for another team we could regret it for years.

There are IF's involved in this. There no absolutes at this time and even though I really want us to take Wentz or Goff at 4 if they are there, it does not mean it is a mistake if we do not. Too many factors involved at this time.

Sadly too many are already setting themselves in stone to belittle the pick unless it is the pick they want and I doubt much will change their minds.

Years down the road we could look back on this draft and see that Wentz, Goff and Lynch were busts and the only good QBs that came out of it were some lower round guys.

Years down the road we could look back on this draft and see that the best player taken in the top 10 was not a QB but a DE or a DB or a LB.

So many factors so although I would be upset if we passed on Wentz if he is sitting there...I gotta keep in mind that just because I don't get what I want, does not mean it is bad for the team.

This team is at a spot where we can use help at a multitude of positions, more defense than offense, so we should SHOULD be coming out of this draft with a player that can make this team better, even if that player is not the one we think it should be.

The draft is always full of the unknown. You have to trust your scouts, or get new ones. I think if Wentz is there they will take him. My gut says they like Lynch more than Goff or steady as much. I do expect a QB to be taken but my fear is we take a guy later in the draft and try to develope a less talented player and waste a pick. After Wentz, Goff, and lynch to me the ready aren't worth a pick unless you way till 5th and take a Brandon Allen type guy who probably won't ever be a great QB but might be a solid backup

Keep in mind, and I am saying this to all in this thread and not just you, just because I make these arguments it does not mean I don't think we should indeed take one of the QBs if they are sitting there.

There is a difference between we don't HAVE to and we SHOULD.

We don't HAVE to draft one of them if they are sitting there...but if they think they are franchise QBs...THEY SHOULD because if they have other players with similar rankings on the board...a QB should trump those when we are in our position.

We are not a team with some young Franchise QB right now...We are a franchise with a QB at the tail end of his career with multiple problems with his Clavicle and a documented history of back problems.

It is indeed the SMART thing to do and what SHOULD be done.

Exactly..............I had this same conversation with my buddy Idgit the other day and I think both us agree with you, that taking a QB would be the smart thing to do.

To suffer through a 4-12 season and pass on a potential franchise QB would be very disappointing to say the least.

The way the Cowboys have gone about free agency, seems to imply a long term perspective. They are avoiding any high priced free agents, signing players to short term deals in most cases to team friendly contracts, and seem to be set on building through the draft.

Taking a QB only makes sense with this strategy, building for the future. The reason I say this is because if the goal it to "win now" for Romo to get a ring, then the team should have been much more active in free agency setting up the team for a 2-3 year run before "blowing it up" and starting over.

So it would make no sense to draft a player to help "win now", if their strategy for the rest of the roster is to 'build for later".

The only other logical conclusion is that maybe Garrett and Jerry don't know what the hell they are doing and are just winging it.........possible as well.

I am going in thinking they are not married to the idea of getting a QB with their first pick. Now that may sound absurd to people who believe and have their heart on QB @ 4 or bust but there is life after the 4th pick.

What I'm thinking we actually do is get a 2ND tier QB: Lynch/Prescott/Cook/Hackenberg. And it depends on value at that current pick. Now, I've stated I was and still am a Wentz supporter and am also intrigued with Goff but

1. I don't see Wentz dropping to us
2. I don't see any QB coming in and winning it all for us if Romo goes down
3. It'll take 2-3 years for that rookie to help us contend.

Now if by any chance Goff slips or Lynch drops in the 1St (as he is the consensus 3rd best draftable qb), I do hope we work a trade like we did Dez and pick one of them up but they will all be developmental QBs for 2-3 years whether it's Wentz or Hackenberg.

Zero percent chance of that being the case. I know both get killed in here, but they are not just winging it.

Hear you there big time! What I don't get with JJ, is the that his idolization of Manziel made him seek a QB in the 1st last year but not after a 4-12 train wreck of a season that was precisely the result of his own franchise QB being out most of the season? It's odd to say the least:confused:

Johnny wasn't in the draft last year
