I think it would be nice to see him back, splitting time with a rookie or somebody, but I kinda doubt it.

My sincere hope is that we draft a big runstuffer type to play next to Bradie James and plug the middle. In a perfect world Dat would stay and come in on passing downs as he's always been very good against the pass in the nickle. This way we can still get the young guy we need in the middle yet have dat for his leadership quality, veteran knowhow, and nickle defense. Im sure it would also prolong his career as he wouldnt be taking on o lineman anymore either. Really wanted Ahmad Brooks at 18 but it appears he chose not to declare for the draft. Now WHO? Bobby Carpenter? a Vet Free agent? Will Witherspoon???

If Dat were to return I think its in his best interest to get into a 4-3 scheme. With his neck issue, age, size he is not likely to be able to take another season of 3-4 pounding inside.

Not to be mean...but sometimes you worry me.

Now on to the topic at hand....

I think it is in Dats best interest to not come back to play...however it would be nice if he was interested in some type of coaching/assistant gig to come back in that area.

Since Parcells apparently doesn't like Gibbs, I wonder if he would consider Dat Nguyen (if Dat interested) hiring Dat as Asst LB coach. Dat is student of the game and with his constantly studying film would be able to help develop our young LBs. Job wouldn't pay much maybe $100,000-$150,000 and hard/long hours involved but maybe..... Sure would be great have him around at least for another year.

Above suggestion made cause I doubt Dat willing risk further injury to his neck unless the problem has been diagnosed and he no longer worried. We also don't know if he's had lot of injuries even when playing in the 4-3 over the years or whether these injuries (knee and neck) only came about because of 3-4.

I really doubt playing a 3-4 defense had alot to do with it.

Bill wants Nat to retire because he doesn't think Nats big enough. If Nat tries and return I think he would be traded.

i wouldnt mind having him for a last hurrah. He could start until Burnett was comfortable enough at mlb.

As a 4-3 MLB, you dont face OL blocking you. You have 2 DT's to take on blocks instead of 1, therefor you get beat up less by bigger guys.

It makes a huge difference

Nov. 30 The Cowboys placed Dat Nguyen on injured reserve this week due to his nagging neck injury, according to the Star-Telegram. He may retire. "He came in my office [Sunday] and he doesn't feel like he can play up to his standards right now," coach Bill Parcells said. "And physically [and mentally], he's not really to the point where he can go full."
Oct. 27 Dat Nguyen practiced Wednesday and was not even listed on the official injury report for the Cowboys, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Nguyen missed the last three games with a stinger.
Oct. 25 Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said he believes Dat Nguyen will be ready for Sunday's game after missing the past three games because of a stinger in his neck, according to the Fort Worth-Star Telegram.
Oct. 19 Dat Nguyen is expected to return from his neck stinger and play on Sunday, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Oct. 14 Dat Nguyen returned to practice Thursday after missing last week's game with a neck stinger, according to the Fort Worth-Star Telegram. "We'll just watch him practice [today] and see how he does and then we'll talk it over," Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. "He's got to have confidence in what he can do."

Nguyen strained his neck Sept. 25 at Oakland, played the next week and then missed three games to end his 43-game starting streak. He played sparingly in the past four games without starting, mainly in passing situations.

The 30-year-old Nguyen, in his seventh season out of Texas A&M, is signed through 2007. He has 665 career tackles and led the Cowboys in tackles the past two seasons, the first player to do that since Ken Norton Jr. in 1992-93.

Besides the neck injury, Nguyen has been bothered by knee problems this season.

"He just physically couldn't withstand some of the things. That's really what the problems were," Parcells said. "You're the first one to know and then it kind of gets you a little depressed, which I think happened to him a little bit too."

link

Dat Nguyen suffured a Neck Stinger and this injury just got worst and worst even though he was only playing sparingly afterwards ie passing situation after suffering the injury. Anybody can suffer a Neck Stinger, doesn't matter what defense you are in.

He also had nagging knee problems that dated all the way back to last year that he just couldnt get over.

Playing linebacker for 7 years in the NFL will do that to you, no matter the defense.
