1. That shoulder injury to San Diego quarterback Drew Brees should quiet trade speculation about backup Philip Rivers. The Chargers weren't all that keen on fielding offers for their 2004 first-rounder anyway, but with Brees' future uncertain -- particularly with an injury that could include damage to the labrum -- San Diego can't risk leaving itself vulnerable at the position by moving Rivers. The injury almost certainly rules out a long-term deal with Brees, too. I mean, why would you sink millions in a guy with a bad shoulder unless you were sure he was OK? And I'm not sure San Diego will know for sure about Brees until he suits up next summer. Look for both these guys in a Chargers' uniform next year.

Now that we know that Kansas City's Dick Vermeil is retiring, look for the Chiefs to push hard for Gregg Williams, Washington's assistant head coach in charge of defense. They will have to compete with St. Louis, a virtual lock to hire a defensive assistant to replace Mike Martz. Martz, who has a year left on his contract, is expected to be fired, with the Rams weeks ago making plans for life without him.
3. Can we please stop talking about Herman Edwards going to the Chiefs? It's not happening, folks, and I don't care what you want to make of Vermeil's comments last week about Herm. Edwards is under contract to the Jets, and if the Chiefs were all that hot and bothered they could offer a draft pick to acquire him. Forget it. They've been down this road before, surrendering a second-rounder to hire Vermeil. Now they're out of that business.
4. I don't know what Bill Parcells' next move is either, but I do know he's had a three-year extension that's been sitting on his desk for weeks. Now, you tell me: Why doesn't he sign it? Is he looking for a better deal? Is he going to retire? Is he uninterested in dealing with his contract this offseason? Better ask Bill.
