I don't like the way BP is spelling JJ

Yes, I know we cannot wear JJ down

Yes, I know that Tyson Thompson and MB III are here to spell JJ and provide depth.

...But is anyone else annoyed at how and when JJ is spelled? For example, at home in the first half were just coming off a turnover and were deep in skins territory and immediately A-train is inserted (JJ had barely broken a sweat at this point); drive fizzles... field goal!

It seems as though BP has a set amount of drives or carries in mind to spell JJ as opposed to just going off game flow. I believe any great back needs to get "the feel" of the game going in order to have a great game. RB by committe can be great in the right situation but I think BP is killing JJ with his current system. Just give JJ the damn ball and spell him when NECESSARY or when it's a LUXERY! Any thoughts?

I agree. I don't like it when TT spells him for an entire drive either, take JJ out for a few plays here and there, but not entire drives.

I have been noticing that as well. Started after the SD game.

Maybe they felt that JJ wasnt being as effective with so many touches.

Seems like they want to give him between 25-30 touches per game, which is pretty normal.

Portis is responsible for when Betts comes into the game. If he feels he needs a play or so off, he get Betts into the game.

But last season when he (JJ) returned to the lineup Bill pounded him relentlessly, the difference is night and day.

I understand to keep his plays down but by planning it in advance is stupid

If you listen to the press conference, he said he doesn't plan it in advance. He goes with the flow of the game and how Julius looks.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled gripe and moan session.

Thanks for that update Roshi. Now after the break, is our play calling too predictable? Stay tuned.

So how else do you spell a back? Aside from giving him a series off and not playing him too much on 3rd downs, I can't see any other way to do it. Like it or not, we can't just keep JJ out there all the time.

Of course, when we've got an important 3rd and short it seems stupid to not have him in there.

JuJo has been in on every 3rd and Short (that I can think of). He got stuffed on 3rd and short vs the Raiders (one play after Barber bounced a run outside and was stopped for no gain).

certainly Bill needs to be more mindful of the situation - MB on 3rd and 1 might seem like a good time, but that is when i would be sure to have my best runner in. i would like to see MB and T2 get most of their carries between the 30 yard lines, and more often on first and second down.

I noticed that MB III seems to now be the 3rd down back. I don't think we need a 3rd down back.

I'm not one to gripe and moan and claim I know more than the coach. I just want to see JJ perform like last year. It just seems as though BP is getting overly cautious. Maybe I'm just frustrated with the way our running game looks to this point.

Still not worried about Julius, he had a few great carries, but that monster Ted Washington killed us.

I don't think that the time of rotation is BP's doing. I think this is a job he gives to the RB's coach to make sure that JJ gets a rest and everyone gets snaps.

If you listen to the press conference last week before the game, when they were talkign about JJ getting so many plays, BP said that he can't watch everything and eluded to that being someone else's job.

I think last week the person responsible was listening to Parcells a little too literally when BP said that if the guy is on the team, you can't be afraid to play him and ended up substituting in poor situations.

Bottom line is that they are trying to get these young guys reps so that they are ready for later on in the season, but in the meantime you are going to see some growing pains while they take their lumps and the coordinators try to find the right balance and what guys do well.
