I read that SD is trying to sign Breese to a long term deal.

Not for nothing, is it fair to let Rivers sit the bench for the next four years.
Maybe he wants to, moneys good ,but I doubt that he can be a happy camper .
Not sure how good he is right now ,but I think the potential is there.
I guess we'll never know, if he's satisfied to make the big $$$ riding the pine,oh well, whatcha gonna do .

I dont think Breese is 100% a sure thing after that injury, they wouldnt be to smart to rid themselves of rivers at this point.

SD has a team that is on the verge of SB contention. They lost a few close games this year and played a very difficult schedule. They have a potent offense right now as directed by Brees and it would be downright stupid of them to change direction now.

Rivers hasn't shown all that much to me thus far. This is a guy who wasn't even talked about as a first rounder until late in 2003 and then really zoomed up the draft charts the last few weeks before the draft as it became increasingly obvious that Schottenheimer had become infatuated with him after the Senior Bowl.

I have never been impressed with Rivers' arm strength or delivery - if you think Henson's is bad (and Tuna does), well Rivers' is way worse. He didn't look particularly impressive in the season finale this year. While it may have been his first start, he has been on the roster for two full years and was a 4-year starter in college.

I think Rivers is getting what he deserves. That ****** bag should have tried to get a contract done instead of holding out of training camp. He would have been the starter if he didn't hold out and let Brees prove himself. Yep, no one to blame but himself. I hope Brees rots on the bench, maybe playes will make a more ernest effort to show up on time.

A.J. Smith is looking pretty stupid on this. They will have tons of money tied up in the QB position. With a young guy with no experience now on the bench making big money. They will never be able to get equivalent value for what they gave up to draft him. They might still be playing if they would have drafted Roy Williams instead or didn't play hardball with Antonio Gates.

Roy Williams the receiver?? At the time Brees was looking like a bust, no one knew he would be this good. As for Gates, your right thats what they get.

True but they still haven't given Brees a legitimate WR even until now and he turned out to be a pretty good QB. David Boston hardly played and definitely wasn't the same player and about all they could offer him was Eric Parker. No wonder he struggled. I think you have to give a young QB the weapons to succeed and they didn't do that they just moved on to Rivers. Gates blows up out of nowhere and they solidify the line with Houck, LT is LT, and all of a sudden Brees is pretty good.

Got a point there. Your right they still don't have a good receiver. Maybe they good trade Rivers for Williams now. Harrington is looking like a bust, and he has an arsenal of weapons.

He doesn't have anyone to help him out, and he only has a couple of years left before he slows down with age. Your right though the dude is underrated.

I think McCardell was good about 5 years ago. I'm not sure if he was ever a number one. Jimmy Smith took alot of the coverage away in him prime.

Rivers did not hit his escalators, so he is scheduled to make min wage.

His Cap number is still about 3 million or more which is way to much for a backup

Houck is currently in Miami, were they had a decent running game, a decent passing game and no one who is as talented on their line as we have. He is doing wonders down in South Beach.

SD has an awful record of getting players in on time -- must be Rivers' fault though

Drew Brees is done , that injury was nasty and there is no way he can
come back with enuff arm strength to be effective in the NFL...Hell
he barely had a strong enuff arm to begin with.

the decision was made 2 years ago that p. rivers would be the future
I believe that Rivers was gonna be handed that job this off season
anyway, especially after this injury. they could not afford both,so why
not go with the one you invested more money in...JMO

Have u ever thought of the fact that his agent may have had more to do with that than he did. Or how about the fact that San Diego is notorious for having problems negotiating contracts with their first round picks.

Rivers was trying to get paid as the number one pick because of the Manning trade. His reasoning was that San Diego picked him number one overall. Merriman didn't show up because of a injury clause. Merriman was trying to protect himself, Rivers got gready.

Well, either way, Agent works for Rivers and not the other way around. Just like don't be blaming the TO mess on Drew Rosenhaus, although Drew didn't do TO any favors, its still TO created mess.

I do agree, San Diego is notorious for being bad at negotiating contracts for 1st Round, ever since AJ Smith took over the GM duties.
