NBC and ESPN are crowing over their ratings for their nighttime "doubleheaders" during the opening week of the NFL season.
NBC's split Thursday-Sunday night DH averaged 21 million viewers, which was up 32 percent over the 2008 season openers.
ESPN's Monday Night DH averaged 13 million viewers, up 15 percent from last year. The Patriots-Bills, Chargers-Raiders were also delivered cable's two biggest audiences of 2009. Ho hum.
Which brings us to Sunday night's Giants-Cowboys game on NBC. Last year's Dec. 14 meeting between the teams at Texas Stadium attracted 23.1 million viewers, most in the relatively brief three year and one game history of NBC's Sunday Night Football.
Given the 2009 opening week numbers, it's not much of a leap to predict that the Cowboys-Giants playing in the regular-season opener at the JonesMahal will set a new Sunday night record.
Question: Will anyone watch the Emmys over on CBS. What the heck were the TV people thinking scheduling opposite SNF?
