I guess we weren't planning on using our 2nd round pick this year

It is pretty clear that we weren't going to use our 2nd round pick for this season. If the Lynch trade would have succeeded, we would have traded it away for a player who was by all accounts not ready to go, even if Romo would have gone down for the year.

After that fell through, they decided to use the pick on a guy who will red shirt this year. I think the kid has a ton of talent, but when you are picking as high as the Cowboys are, you can't afford to waste a resource like that on someone who won't be a contributor.

Smith is already regaining nerve function. His nerve is expected to finish healing by July. I believe if the latest MRI's would have indicated if there was scar tissue forming inside the nerve preventing a full recovery.

There is no certainty because the regeneration is ongoing but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in TC.

Fuzzy, what is the difference btw his injury and Lattimore's?

Pretty standard waste of 2nd rounder for us.

Oh well.. I love the player. I thought he was the best guy in the draft by a long shot and I just hope we see him be more than a shadow of himself within the next 3 years.

I think that is extremely optimistic, especially considering when he sustained the injury.

This kid may play this year, that is unbelievable to receive that kind of optimism. If healthy he's the best Jaylon in the Darft...and the best Jalen....no contest the most IMPACT in the entire Draft; albeit pre-injury.

You got the most talented player in the draft at pick 34. I don't understand how anyone can be unhappy with this.

I'm not sure he was the most talented player in the draft. He had a severe injury very late in the year and will not contribute much, if at all, this year. This is assuming he makes it back to becoming the player he was. It isn't that hard to understand that we need contributors.

Fuzzy, what is the difference btw his injury and Lattimore's?

Lattimore's was the result of a helmet to the knee. It compressed and twisted violently. He tore his ACL, PCL, and LCL as well as severe damage -although not completely severed- to a major artery and his peroneal nerve.

Smith just planted his similar to what Lee did and his knee popped. The complication came when he was pushed and he planted on that left foot briefly before limping off it immediately unable to bear weight. When he did that he stretched the peroneal briefly. He ended with damage to his ACL, PCL, and peroneal.

So Lattimore's knee suffered the trauma of a helmet striking the knee and then getting compressed and twisted in a pile. Smith's popped and then he stepped on the knee for half a second.

Ultimately Lattimore had a degenerative circumstance. He said his knee never felt structurally sound after the reconstruction and he had progressively worsening pain. There is no indication that is the case with Smith.

If you are into qualitative generalizations then Dr. Andrews said that Lattimore's injury was "as bad as you will see in football" whereas, Dr. Cooper said the Smith's nerve was not damaged like you see in severe knee injuries.

If he wasn't the consensus top talent in the draft he was at least in the top 3. I have faith that the surgeon who did his surgery, our team Doctor, knows what he is talking about.

I agree that it's a risky strategy than can produce a lot of wastage. But it's a good pick if it pans out and even healthy players can crap out. Having said that, I m not sure I would have made the call although I'm super excited that Jaylon is a Cowboy.

Based on what? He is 16 weeks post op from the reconstruction and is already squatting and cutting on the knee. He claims it is pain free.

The nerve regeneration is happening on schedule and should be done around July. It could take longer but MRI can see the progression.

Now granted he needs to continue and complete his rehab but all indications are that he is ahead of schedule not behind.

Awesome, thanks. Some in the media are erroneously comparing the two.

Well the peroneal, PCL, and ACL were damaged in both circumstances and there are not that many knee injuries with this level of complexity. They are similar, it's just that the severity is not the same which is everything in terms of prognosis.

I read where Dr. Andrews said that Lattimore's tendon's were shredded into "spaghetti" which made the reconstruction difficult. Smith's knee never experienced the same level of compression, twist, and torque nor had the blunt force trauma of a helmet to aid the dislocation.

thanks for explaining about smiths knee injury. maybe he will be able to come back in 2017 and have a chance to be a starting linebacker.

Goodness. I wonder how Lattimore didn't pass out on the field.

Based on the uncertainty of this injury. Even you said this in another thread:

Well the nerve could come back in June or it could come back in January. They don't know until it's done, whether or scar tissue forms, and he is moving his foot fully or partially. If his foot starts lifting this summer he could be ready this fall though in theory.

That is best case. Worst case is he is undergoing surgery this fall to fix scar tissue.

So like I said, that is extremely optimistic. Your worst case is undergoing another surgery in the fall.
