Why do teams travel away to other places for training camp?

Is it to get away from the norm, like the family? Is it to learn how to stay in a different place during a real game? Why don't the Cowboys just train in the new stadium? I would think training in the place that you are going to play in would be better? Is it an NFL thing?

What is the benefit? Educate me...

So I can watch them after work? :lmao2:

To market the team so Mr. Jones can make much more $$$$$$$$ is close to the real answer.

You can emphasize structure by doing this. Since players are not at home, you can organize their entire activity around the Camp. Film sessions, curfews, meetings, all can be enforced. You do it to limit distractions basically.

In the past the Cowboys would go to California to get away from the oppressive summer heat of Texas. The heat can beat down a team during the long hours of two a days.

Also, I doubt the stadium is ready for every day use. They are still putting finishing touches, so having the players practice there would interfere with that. I would not be surprised if future camps are held in Dallas(Arlington).

I played baseball in HS/College and never went to a baseball camp, aside from maybe across town for a day or so...to a baseball clinic.

I would think there are more distractions going somewhere else rather than staying home....

When you played for BYU, where did you guys practice? And BYU has a winning season most of the time.

Colleges rarely have the money to move massive amounts of equipment and players and fork over for the food and stuff. It's not the same thing at all.

Also, if colleges take athletes out of classes they could end up ineligible to play.

So why save that money by training the players in the new stadium and make them sleep there? Same thing, right? Save moving expenses...and distractions...and the fans can still watch them?

Why do teams not practice in their own stadiums, or even hold camps their. Wouldn't it be to the benefit of the players to practice on the same field with the same lighting they will play on for 8 weeks in the regular season.

I bet jerry makes more money having camp in san antonio than he would having it here.

matter of fact I bet the city of San Antonio ponies up a big ole chunk of change just to get them there.

If you look at the stadium events schedule, there would be to many scheduling conflicts to have training camp there.

I'm pretty sure that I've got it all wrong, but the image I have of training camp is like this:

The Cowboys are at a college deep in the woods; the players are checked into their rooms, tucked in, and the doors are chained.

Don Meredith, Walt Garrison, and unnamed others pick the locks, climb out the ventilation shafts, or go out through secret passageways they installed before camp started.

They stay out till 5 at local bars and return to the dorms and practice all day without salt or water and repeat the process for a month.

But officially they have no free time at all for that month.

IIRC, the NCAA has to approve any offsite practices or training periods for football and those are only approved in the event of natural disasters or something similar.

Marketing I assume has a great deal to do with it as well as creating camaraderie between the players.

Can you imagine Buffalo coming to someplace like Provo, Utah for training camp? Would anyone even notice they were there?

FWIW, 5,000 total showed up for both of the first day practices with 81 in Buffalo. Dallas had 10,000+ show up for the first practice today. Welcome to "North America's Team" :lmao2:
