Operative word being "college."
I think you are just trying to temper expectations for Gregory, and I understand that. But how many rookie pass rushers come right in to the NFL and look as good as Gregory has, no matter who he's been facing?
Not many at all.
Gregory is the real deal, 100% and Dallas will miss him for the next couple-three games.
He is going to be the best pass rusher on the team and it is going to happen very soon. And yes I mean over Greg Hardy too.
Gregory just has "it". He is a natural pass rusher, through-and-through. Some of what he does simply by instinct is what guys need to learn in the pros. Where a lot of guys get close to the QB, Gregory gets there. Rod Marinelli (who I have a ton of respect for) absolutely loves Gregory... and Marinelli doesn't throw out praise very often, particularly for rookies. He knows he stole one in Gregory. He's just a long, lean, athletic guy who has stuff you can't teach.
Plus, Randy works extremely hard and is very smart. Very. And like Marinelli says, he has natural heavy hands and his arms are extremely long. He is just naturally strong. Country strong.
Put the entire package together and you have a special edge rusher.
Of course, the Cowboys weren't sure until they got him in pads... but the second they put the pads on, they knew right away that Gregory was going to be something special at WDE. All NFL veterans say you can tell right away if a guy is going to be a player or not. Everyone knew immediately that they had something special.
All that is why the Dallas coaches viewed him as too valuable to risk in the last PS game.
