I honestly think they got a good solid player in Tapper

Lawrence was our sack leader.

You are correct, Lawrence had 8 sacks to lead team and Hardy was second with 6 after coming off a 4 game suspension. I understand that this variance is huge and completely dismisses my point.

Tapper I honestly think they got a good solid player in the 4th Round. It would not shock me
if hes a much much better player than Gregory or Lawrence will ever become. I think he will
be a player similar to Greg Ellis. This is just my opinion.

He is a hustle guy an quite athletic. I don't think he will ever have the pass rush potential that Gregory has, but I think he can definitely be an effective player for the Cowboys.

Agreed -- Marinelli has a nice piece of clay to work with here!

"And that they're going to need a lot more clay to work with for that defence...DERP!!!"- D-bag Live commentator.

I hated it when that guy said it. I put a hex on him through the computer monitor almost immediately. He should be developing some awful affliction any day now.

how does tapper compare to hardy coming out of school?
Or ellis?

Physically he reminds me of Anthony Spencer... A shade less than 6'3". 270lbs. 4.59 forty.

Fast enough to gain the edge, but with the type of build to hold the corner.

Wouldn't be shocked to see the kid have a solid 8-10 year career averaging 7-8 sacks a season.

way more athletic than both those guys but extremely raw as he was playing 5T in the 3-4,

The amazing thing is his 40 time was faster than many of the wr's. The guy is a freak athlete and if he puts in the work to learn, he could be a very good player

OU fan here. You will love Tapper.

Great motor and leader. Very talented. Fantastic pick.

I know nothing about Collins though.

Our need for a pass rush was way overblown. Is it a need? Yes, of course. But people are acting like we have zero pass rush because Gregory and Lawrence are going to miss the first four games. Never make a draft pick based on four games. Especially when all four are winnable with the pass rush we will/won't have those games.

My thoughts are similar to yours.

However, it came to light today that Dallas was prepared to draft edge rusher Leonard Floyd 6th overall if they had traded down with Baltimore only to find Ezekiel Elliott and Jalen Ramsey both off the board.

The Cowboys also wanted to select Emmanuel Ogbah at the top of round two.

That screams the team is concerned with its pass rush.

I hope Randy Gregory stays clean and builds on the promise shown during pre-season. I hope DeMarcus Lawrence's back heals and he picks up where he left off lass season. I hope Benson Mayowa proves to be a find and Ryan Russell takes a positive step forward this year. And I hope Charles Tapper takes to the scheme like a duck to water.

Tyrone Crawford should be a lot better playing healthy and with Cedric Thornton playing NT. Maliek Collins might prove to be a quick study while Jack Crawford and David Irving can help at multiple spots. So can Terrell McClain, if he makes the roster and avoids injury.

I'm optimistic things will be better, but I don't believe the concern was overblown.

So excited by Tapper's potential. His measurables and the fact that he was used incorrectly in the wrong sceme. Maybe I am being too optimistic, but I say a huge bang for the buck type of draft pic.

Yeah reading how he excelled in a gap penetration scheme and then never complained about changing to a two gap scheme even though it killed his stats - it made me hopeful.

I'm hoping for the best right now, but let's not go overboard. When was the last time a 4th rounder made a difference on this team? Doug Free ???

Tapper was a guy I wanted around the pick we ended up getting him. No OU fan but I wanted their players, Shepherd, Striker, Sanchez, and Tapper. Tapper just always got to the ball, I didn't even think about him being in the wrong scheme. He could end up a stud for us. I thought this was the second great pick we made although if Smith ends up playing around his billing then I may change my view. But yes I'm excited about Tapper too.

Hitchens would be the last 4th rounder, but I understand the point.

The thing with this situation is that with two DE's being suspended for the first 4 games that is an opportunity for Tapper to get snaps. It's not like other situations in the past where the rookie was "froze-out" due to the guys in front of him.

Also pass-rushing DE doesn't have the complexity of other positions. There no receiving tree to learn. There's no blitz pickup stuff to learn. There's no having learn the intricacies of a zone defense. It's "The quarterback is there and your job is to tackle him" kind of thing.

The Cowboys franchise could boom if Tapper turns into a player. If he somehow became a full time starter their defense is looking at a good free agency period and a draft away from having a top 5 unit.

Right now Collins is a pure pass down penetrator. Offers next to nothing on run downs until he develops more

Sidenote: Its still weird to me an OU fan doesnt know Huskers. Never liked Nebraska going Big 10. And Im not even a Big 12 guy

Agreed. Pete Carroll has had a lot of success with the development of young players (especially on defense) by playing them early and often. That's one thing I like very much about Carrol. He's not afraid to put these kids out there to learn the game. He's willing to live with their mistakes for the sake of their development and long term improvement of his team.

Greg Ellis before breaking his leg would have been a 15 sack per year guy IMO. He was never the same afterwards.
