Why does everyone think Miles Austin is so fast? I did a quick google search on Miles Austin and found this on SI.com

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2006/draft/players/29607.html

It says his 40 time was 4.52.

I'm sorry but 4.52 isn't a blazing speed by any stretch. I'm sure he is a little faster then his college days but how much can someone improve their speed?

If he was so fast why was he a undrafted free agent? Guys who are really fast get drafted even though they may need a few years to develop.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Was Miles Austin hurt when he ran his 40 therefor his 4.52 isn't very accurate?

I'm not down on Miles Austin or anything like that. I was hoping for some clarification on his speed.

He ran a 4.47 at the combine FWIW. Decent speed...mostly in relation to his size. He has an impressive size speed ratio.

I agree. There's a difference between timed speed and game speed.

watch him play instead of a timed sprint that he ran in shorts and a t-shirt with no adrenaline flowing through his body like he would have in a game.

I agree with you . I have seen him caught from behind a few times....
I am not down on him but I think the people that think he will step in and be a star are fulling themselves....
Roy Williams a solid number one but after that we do not have much to brag about ....
I would be happy if we went 2 tight ends lots and ran the ball with maybe the best trio of running backs in the NFL...
as a matter of fact I think Dallas has the best TE and RB combo in the NFL and I would love for Dallas to embrace it .. keep the defense off the field and pound the football . Now and then stretch the field with R.Williams .

I'm sure T.O.'s timed speed wouldnt be very good either anymore but in the open field, again very hard to catch....not trying to make another T.O. thread but just saying.

I don't know if anybody thinks that he has blazing speed. Well let me speak for myself...I don't think he has blazing speed. Chris Johnson has blazing speed... Newman has blazing speed... Austin is just fast, fast enough to get separation and have a good chance of not getting caught from behind. His major problem was that he took bad angles after the catch. I think he has a good chance to duplicate what Terry Glenn did here if he continues to improve on his hands and route running.

His game speed appears impressive.

On the other hand, Felix Jones looks like he is barely moving when he runs but people are missing him and falling all around him. I realize Felix is fast as heck, I'm just saying he doesn't always look it to me.

From now on they should time the 40 like this...

1/Full pads
2/Start on the snap
3/Let them start about 5 yards back out of their normal football stance but don't start the clock until they hit 5 yards. (they would actually run 45, only 40 yards is timed)

That's the kind of speed that I care about.

what's funny is that we have 2 of the top 25 WRs from that draft, according to NFLDraftScout then

Miles Austin (20th) and Travis Wilson (7)

For WRs yes, but for many other positions, that would be a waste. The first 10 yards are more important to lineman....and several other positions, to show a players 'explosiveness'.

Just wondering, is it a rule violation for a WR to line up in a sprinter stance with his hands on the ground?

That would be pretty cool to see a few times.

Miles isn't that fast.
BTW-Felix is also a 4.5 guy.
Neither is a blazer.
Did you find the powerpoint presentation on how Miles prepared for the combine (lost like 20 pounds or something)? You can google for it. Really interesting. He was chubby in college.

There's a reason football guys will say that forty times only tell part of the story.

Jerry Rice and TO both ran 4.6 forties....aren't they fast?

So much goes into running the forty. Guys that will be top picks will go to camps to learn techniques to shave hundredths of seconds off their time. Guys that can't afford it line up....and run....

Not only that, guys that come into the NFL have access to nutritionists, trainers....they work out all the time.....

So, the speed you come into the NFL with isn't the speed you necessarily have over the course of your career.

To me a forty time will only verify that a fast guy is fast. If a guy is fast on tape...and on the field and he runs a 4.55 forty, that doesn't mean he's slow.

A fast forty time doesn't make a guy a good WR or CB. An average forty time doesn't make a guy that produces in college a bad prospect.

Learn to look past forty times...

Also if you don't play much and you want to, you work on things to get better. His good be having speed and agility, so maybe he took an offseason or two and jus did speed and agility training.

WR's used to line up with their hand on the ground all the time, like in the 70s and into the 80s. You sure don't see that much anymore though.

I agree completely on Felix. He must have the kind of speed that just pops out at you in person, the way the Cowboys were oooh-ing and ah-ing on him this preseason, but when you watch him run, he doesn't look that fast. He just bends slightly to make people miss and always looks like he's running to daylight. It doesn't look that impressive, but he sure is effective.

Yep, I loved it when they did that. About the last time I remember that was in the late 80s -- Irvin did it all the time at Miami, as did most wideouts of the time. It's probably on youtube somewhere.

And no, Austin doesn't have that otherworldly speed that some guys have. But he's fast enough to make DBs respect him and back off a little and to make big plays once he catches the ball, and that's what matters.

And on 40s and guys who play faster than they time... I have always felt that some players get a burst of adrenaline on the field that they don't get from running a timed sprint. I know in my meaningless, insignificant football career that I was much faster when chasing something, either the ball in the air or a player with the ball, than when just trying to run by someone. Who knows why. It was probably that my brain had a specific target to go after, or something like that. But TO was the same way -- when he got an opening for a chance at a touchdown, his eyes got big and he just found an extra gear, probably from adrenaline. Jerry Rice was the same way. I've always suspected that the "track guys" who are the opposite and fail to play to their great timed speed lack that extra burst, for whatever reason.

Supposedly he was faster than TO and TO admitted it.

He is quick footed and fast.

He is like an oversized Terry Glenn. I bet Bill told him to watch how Terry Glenn plays the game.
