I just lost a ton of respect for Montana

I didn't see a thread about this yet, so here I go.

Although Joe Montana was a 49er, I always really liked and respected the guy. Now, I think he's just a money-hungary a** hole. Who the hell does he think he is to damand $100k for an appearance that would have lasted about 6 seconds? Nobody else got an appearance fee. Every other SB MVP got $1,000 for incedentals, plane tickets, game tickets, and hotel rooms (not in a super 8 either). Why would he or Bradshaw think they deserve any more than that?

Your thoughts?

I don't know -- I usually need about 75K for incidentals, so I can understand it.

Bradshaw didn't attend for personal reasons, not money and I have yet to see a reputable source show Montana held out for cash, only a few internet rumormongers.

Reports: Money differences leave QBs out

ESPN.com news services

When the NFL unveiled its MVPs from the previous 39 Super Bowls, only three living members skipped the ceremony.

Former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw decided to stay home, while former Dolphins MVP Jake Scott was traveling in Australia.

Montana, the league's only three-time Super Bowl MVP, turned down the invitation over money, Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Montana, however, told ESPN2's Cold Pizza last week that he wasn't going to be at the game because his son had an important basketball game he wanted to attend.

Bradshaw, who told league officials that he wanted to be with his family, also took issue with the fees, the Chronicle reported. Bradshaw, through a representative, denied the Chronicle's report that there was a dispute over money.

Former MVPs were given $1,000 for incidental expenses while in Detroit, along with other amenities such as plane tickets, car rental and game tickets.

Sources told each paper that Montana asked for a guarantee of at least $100,000 in appearance money.

When the league balked at Montana's demands, the quarterback declined to be in attendance.

He didn't want to go, he didn't feel it was worth his time unless he got $100k.

I know once I am retired I am not going to making any appearances at my job. Why would I expect someone else to?

Because he was already there in Detroit. Its not like they had to pluck him out of the vineyards of Napa Valley to come to the superbowl, he was already there. He just pouted when they wouldn't pay him and said he won't go.

What do you expect from a forty-niner.........next thing you know one of them will be doing something else stupid, like dancing with the stars or something..............

Personally I'm glad Montana didn't show. I prefer my lasting image of him to be the one in the Fed Ex commercial. You know, the one where he is in the way too tight retro jersey...beer gut hanging out...and running like a 60 year old drunk.

There is a difference between a Job and sport. Its not like he was working for Walmart and they had 50 Best Employees ever gathering or something. And I don't know 50 Million will be watching the Wal-Mart reunion either.

So thats really pretty weak argument. Its one thing, if was for 49ers organization event even, you could have that argument.

Second, Joe would have gotten lot more than 100K publicity by that appearance, which is why I even question his intelligence or whoever manages him intelligence. And most likely he would have been the coin flipper, instead of Tom Brady, Joe had the most SB MVPs. And that would have been even more publicity for him.

So all in all, he cost himself more money than the money he demanded. So it was pretty damn stupid decision, if he really did decline the appearance due to money only.

How is it so many people missed this in the article?

Montana, however, told ESPN2's Cold Pizza last week that he wasn't going to be at the game because his son had an important basketball game he wanted to attend.

Seems pretty clear to me re: Montana. Not sure about Bradshaw, even tho he declined the report.

I met Montanna at an autograph session once, my girlfriend at the time was a huge fan. I was really shocked at what a jerk the guy turned out to be...apparently there was some confusion about his appearance time, and the Management Company running the show sold out a 2nd autograpgh session, without Montanna's knowledge. He was very rude to the fans after the fact...I actually overheard him say to one fan "tough" as she tried to explain to him that she had purchased a ticket for the second session and was sorry he was called back for the show. These guys have no problems collecting a big fat paycheck beforehand though...Marino was another chucklehead, he used the "F" word at least a dozen times in front of kids...because he didn't think things were moving along quickly enough.

Bradshaw was also scheduled for that day...from what I undrstand, he left in the middle because he was shiat faced drunk.

Anyway, from my memory of Montana, his actions with regard to this years SB don't surprise me at all.

I think Joe needs to ask himself "gee Joe, why do I usually get 100k for an appearance?"

He's still making $$ off his NFL career. He should have been there.

None of these sources for either Bradshaw or Montana look all that good to me. Give it a few days and the truth will come out.

Football is not the focus of the superbowl anymore :(

why can the NFL, ABC, Performers, etc. etc. etc. CASH IN $$$$ yet montana or the next guy not?

what he did was foolish but it's his right to cash in like everyone else did.

Good for Montana for what he did. He basically said his family is his priority (which it should be) and you either pay me handsomely or this is a simple choice.

If anything I've gained more respect for Montana over this. Then he was a NFL QB, now he's a dad. Then his family supported him by being by his side, now he supports them by being by their side.

I don't take this demand as being greedy by Montana. I take it as him saying this is what it will cost to pull me away from my responibilities. Inwhich the kid probably would have recieved a brand new car with the money and the fact his dad missed the game would have been forgotten. Otherwise it's a pat on the shoulder, a ticket stub and telling his son what a good game he had, dad saw the tape. The phrase "absentee father" comes to mind. And is it another couple of c-notes and a demand to make an appearance at the Pro Bowl in a week, just to start all over again next year as the new season takes off in September.

Sometimes you just gotta say no. After all we are talking about Joe Montana here, not a Desmond Howard or a Larry Brown. Give an inch and the PimpDaddy NFL will take a mile.

Man those are just the perks that go with the crap. I mean celebrities is basically what you are after football, look I'm sure being in the public eye isn't always what they want to do. I bet it wears on a person and becomes very cumbersome at times.

Hell I'd wanna get paid too, to be put on spectical at a whim.

Did the NFL get away with paying the Rolling Stones a $1000 + tickets?
