He was at a coaches clinic here and I took some time in the after clinic social to pick his brain about his time in the NFL.

Best Lineman he ever coached...Bruce Smith.

He showed me the pass rush moves for McMichael, Perry, Armstrong, Dent and Roper. Talked a bit about Hampton's move also, but stated he had retired by the time he got to the Bears.

I laughed when he said that the only move he remembers of Perry's was to sit there and fill the gap.

He said the retirement of Hampton was hard on the line. Coupled with the death of lineman, can't remember the name, the Bears defensive line wasn't as effective as the one in 85. He subbed out Perry often on pass rushing downs.

Also said McMahon was a bit of a letdown in 86.

Lineman with all the pass rush moves...John Randle. What he meant was that typically NFL lineman usually have one "go to" pass rush move and a counter to that move. Randle had them all and used them all.

Hated getting a hug from Randle at the end of the games. He would get that "black crap" all over his shirt. On the hot days the stuff would "run like Tammy Faye Baker's mascara".

I joked a bit with him about the music city miracle. He says I'm blind if I couldn't see that it was a forward lateral. He did express some regret about how that season ended for the Bills and for Phillips.

We talked a bit about the Cowboys. He hopes Wade can get this team over the hump. He said he was one coach who really deserved to get his shot at the Lombardi and he really like the talent assemble on the team.

On Mike Ditka. Just loved the fire in the guy.

Why he retired. Too many long days and he could feel his age. I believe the Tenn. game was hard on him too.

We talked at great length about coaching younger kids and the trials of football.

All in all I got to talk to him for about an hour. It was good getting his perspective.

I agree about the Music City forward lateral. Every time I see the replay I can't believe they allowed it.

...the social was held in the local junior football team's clubhouse and there was about 100 football coaches in this small space. It was incredibly loud.

I forgot about his comments about (2) Cowboys Offensive linemen - Erik Williams and Larry Allen. He used one word to describe what they meant to him as the opposing defensive line coach - "unbeatable".

I thought that was a pretty impressive description that he gave of those two players. On the Vikings team all he asked of his players was to occupy those two and hold their ground. He was never looking for plays from the players lined up opposite those two.

He also liked Emmitt Smith. And I mean he really liked Emmitt! Emmitt was the first player he talked about when I told him I was a Cowboys fan. The Viking defensive game plans revolved more around Emmitt than either Troy or Michael.

He hated Emmitt's "peekaboo" running style that made it hard for linemen to pick him up until he had run past them.

John Randle had only one defensive call he would respond to..."JET". He was a player who wasn't interested about zone blitzing or covering a man. He just wanted to attack the QB. Black man's version of Marc Gastineau.

On the media. He said he had a genuine dislike for them. His retort was, "What the hell do they know about the defensive schemes we called on certain plays?"

On the Buffalo Bills team when he retired he said he really had high hopes for Aaron Schoebel to step up his game and become a star in the league.

I tried to bait him during the Emmitt comments on Barry vs Emmitt. I'm not sure if he heard me over the crowd noise, but he didn't answer.

Following on the question of his retirement he did say he thought the younger players wouldn't listen to an old guy like him anymore.

There was alot more exchanged between us, but with the noise in the room I found myself often nodding even though I didn't hear a thing he said.
