I think David Irving starts year at SDE

He played very well last year in limited snaps, and this year, Marinelli complimented his freakish ability to "bend" at his 6'7" height. With his ability and height (to bat balls when QB throw to their right), I think he gets first crack at strongside defensive end, especially on early downs. On pass downs, he will be in a rotation with with Tyrone Crawford, who can kick out to SDE when Maliek Collins replaces him at 3-tech, and with Jack Crawford. I think Mayowa, Jack Crawford, and Tapper will man WDE.

Of course, this will all change when D Law and Gregory return. Would not be surprised if Terrell McClain and/or Jack Crawford are cut and the rotations change dramatically.

Where would he have been drafted without the off the field issues?

He did show the most of what's left if Lawrence isn't available. But if they were going w/Crawford to start @ one of the end spots I think they would put him on the strong side. Maybe Irving shows enough to prevent the team from needing to move him from his 3 tech spot. The kid did show flashes last year (good burst/penetration) and is very athletic for being so tall.

I can't say i disagree with you at all. I don't think they should temporarily move T. Craw. He's the starting DT. Keep it that way. I also wouldn't be surprised if Irving switches permanently to SDE. Seems to be his better position and i think the rookie Collins is more of an ideal 3 tech. Also i agree that i can see J. Craw and T. McClain getting cut either before the season or a few games in.

I agree. I like Irving, and Ryan Russell too. There's a lot to work with there; these are talented kids.

With any luck, Lawrence's suspension is cut to two games so any contingency plan turns out to be a brief one.

I rather leave Lawrence at LE since it took him half the year to get going. Let him settle in and see he produce there all year. Find the RE by moving guys around

i think our starting DL will be. Crawford, Collins, Thornton, Mayowa

That's a good guess, but I doubt Mayowa can hold up vs. the run. He played at 240 last year because the Raiders moved him to linebacker. Seattle listed him at 252 pounds when he was a rookie; so maybe he's bulking up again. Either way, it'll be a committee at right end with Mayowa, Ryan Russell, and possibly Charles Tapper (he could be more of a left end).

I see the DL depth chart (after the suspended guys return) looking like

WDE - Gregory/Mayowa/Tapper
3DT - T. Craw/Collins
1DT - Thornton
SDE - Lawrence/Irving/Russell

I see Tapper and Russell playing both sides and Irving also playing inside.

Both the raiders and seattle listed Mayowa at 252. The 240 listing was from nfl.com that took it from either college or his proday and never updated. Pete Carroll said he had gained 12-15 prior to camp that last year. Some media guys took that as saying he was up in the 260s. Broaddus when looking at his film says he's very good against the run.
