I think I have a man crush on Bob Sanders

Nothing against our guys, but I'd trade either one of our safeties for Bob Sanders in a heart beat (and I actually like Roy). Outside of Linebacker and CB, Saftey is my favorite position and watching Sanders play is great.

The only knock against him is that he can't seem to stay healthy for a full season, but he's quicker than just about anyone on the field and plays both the run and pass pretty darn well.

I know the scheme the Colts play probably helps, it allows him to freelance a bit more since he's rarely responsible for a man, but rather a zone but I think he's got the speed to match up against most receivers in this league even though he may be a little undersized.

He is definitely speedy, and a fiend in Madden due to that speed.

But for all the superhuman characteristics attributed to him (fixing the Colts defense, curing cancer) it's tough to figure out exactly what it is that he does well. He has range, which allows him to help in run support, but he has forced 5 turnovers in 4 years, which is something I kind of expect of elite safeties. Alot of his great plays seem to be him cleaning up a tackle someone else started.

Of the elite safeties in the NFL, Sanders is the one I least understand the hype for.

Neither do I.........I can't wait to see him cover Moss.....Moss will be like, "look it's Tatu, the plane boss, the plane".....Sanders is overrated, but I will admit, lil man will lay some wood on you......I like his heart, but he is not in the top 10 of current players at that position IMO.....

Sanders reminds me of Ed Reed, a small, active safety who flies all over the field. If there's a difference, Reed is the ball-hawking type while Sanders excels at stopping the run (even @ his size).

Two things...

He's an underdog-type player. Undersized and doesn't fit any of the metrics for a football player, much less a safety, except he's a baller. Media loves that kinda player.

He's the new Adrian Wilson. Every year the media finds an "underrated" guy and pump him up because they're always looking for the next big thing. And he's a fire plug for the Colts.

Then once they pump him up, then they tear him down. I call it the Roy Williams syndrome.

Nahhh, they won't tear him down because he plays for the Colts! The media loves them and they can do no wrong!

Always seems to get hurt which would leave us with Killa Keith Davis at SS.

Pass.

I posted this in another thread, not knowing there was a brand new thread about Sanders. So I'll post it here, too.

Sanders' interception Monday night was the THIRD of his career. He's been in the league four years now and still doesn't have as many interceptions as Roy made during his rookie season.

And if you had watched Sanders closely Monday night, you would have seen him 1) Getting burned by some scrub tight end named Greg Estandia for a 22-yard completion; 2) Completely whiffing on a tackle at the line of scrimmage, allowing Fred Taylor to run past him for a 17-yard gain; 3) Taking poor angles in pursuit; and 4) Taking on blockers instead of trying to make tackles.

The lesson here is that if you run all around the field like the Tazmanian Devil from Looney Tunes, people will think you're great, even if you make mistakes and hardly ever make any big plays. Hey, it works for Troy Polamalu and Bob Sanders.

The down side to him he is only 5'-8' so he stays hurt. He is a very good player but the way he plays compared to his size..he stays hurt an awful lot

Troy Palamalu is the best safety in the NFL by far.

If only he could cover. Or make more big plays. Or hit hard. Or tackle.

But hey, he has long hair and runs all around. What a player!

I think one part of the love affair Colts fans have with Sanders is related to the suckage that the Colts run defense displayed when he was out last year. There were multiple reasons for that, but for some reason, most of the credit for their improvement in the playoffs and SB are credited to Sanders.

The thing is - even if he deserves all the credit for that - rather than being an indicator of his eliteness, it might just mean that his backup sucks .

I'd give Ed Reed that distinction!

When he's not pistol whipping somebody, Sean Taylor has been looking pretty good.

True, Zman, but my Dallas bias refuses to give anyone wearing "Dark Red & Canary Yellow" any props :banghead: ! Besides, he's good for at least one 15yd, game-changing penalty a game!:lmao:
