he had a good season and all, but I think Selvie is still backup talent. Dallas can do better at this spot.

Everybody says our biggest need will be 3-tech, but think about this... Hatcher was our 3-tech this year and he was probably the best in the NFL. He had double digit sacks and missed a few games. That's unheard of for a 4-3 DT. And 1-techs usually aren't the different between a great and a horrible D-line. My point is, even with Ware and Selvie starting, an excellent 3-tech in Hatcher, a healthy Sean Lee, etc, we were still one of the worst defenses in the NFL. And odds are, if we release Hatcher and draft his replacement, no rookie coming out of the draft will have the same production that Hatcher had this year.

we can't release hatcher.he is a fa

Selvie needs to be a "20 snaps per game" guy, filling in at either DE spot... Not a starter getting 50 snaps per game.

The Cowboys would need to do better for a starter in order for the Dline to improve.

If Selvie proves to be our best bet to start when camp is said and done, then so be it. It's hard to find fault with someone who worked as hard as he did to be at his best. We could easily do much worse than to start Selvie. He may not be ideal but he'll do 'til someone better comes along.

Fully agree.

I see Selvie as a rotational player, not a full time starter. He wouldn't start on most teams. D-line needs to be upgraded everywhere, including Selvie's spot.

If you really think about it, our biggest need is going to be 3tech. I'm not so on board with bringing Ware back but it's going to happen so it's not worth debate. Selvie, statistically, had a good year for defensive ends, not just for his name. Was it mind blowing? No but you can't have JJ Watt at every position. Broaddus seems very unimpressed with the ends this year and we're low on the cap. I think with another year in the system Selvie could rack up 7-9 sacks next year which is plenty serviceable. He has great work ethic too, so it may be worth letting him prove himself again. I for one won't be pissed if he starts

Him and Ware could have nice years as starters if they can keep a healthy swing guy and it's also possible that he becomes the guy to spell Ware and Crawford. Crawford was drafted to replace Spencer imo so he's due to have a good camp and work his way into a starting position at some point. He's definitely been a bright spot.

Not that I would be satisfied with a starter like Selvie, but he has earned it if it does happen.

He came in cold and served proudly and ably (most of the time when our need was the greatest). I cannot say enough about him and his other mates who came in off the street, put on the uni and gave it their all.

They are worlds apart from the Ratliffs of this world. If I ever see Selvie in person I will ask for a hug and tell him how much dedication like his is appreciated.

I disagree; he has proven he is capable of solid play as a starter. He probably is best suited, though, to a rotational role as a designated pass rusher.

He was a car wreck. I question if he even has backup value.

The Cowboys probably will carry 4 DT's.

Crawford is about a 100% lock for one of the spots.
Bass is probably better than 50%.

I think you can lock in one player from the upcoming draft for a spot.

The remaining spot? Hopefully a FA who's better than Hayden.

Bass has been IR for the last two years and he has barely played, that guy is hopeless too.

His injury history doesn't give him a 100% lock on a roster spot and that's why I posted what I did.

But as a player, from what I saw in preseason he's a better DT than anyone else the Cowboys had other than Hatcher.
