I think there's a really good chance that Jaylon Smith will play, in fact, if the Cowboys are thinking ahead here, Jaylon will sleep in a hyperbaric chamber every night from now until his nerve completely regenerates. That makes his recovery happen ASAP.

That's why I think he will play this year.... thoughts???

The interesting thing to me is that the knee shouldn't be an issue for playing this season.

It's the nerve in the ankle, which could come back at anytime. And the guess is 6 months from surgery, which was January. So I guess I don't understand-- if the nerve regenerates and comes back, which is totally possible, then why couldn't he play this season?

From what I understand he's ahead of schedule with his rehab. But even with the nerve "sleeping", he's ahead of schedule with recovering from the nerve damage. If I read the reports right, he's hopeful to gain an inch of nerve recovery a month. The doctors told him not expect anything from the nerve for 3 months post operation. In early march he started getting feeling back and his knee is tinkling which is a good sign that the nerve will heal. From what I read and understand he started getting sensations in his knee before doctors expected him to. So it's looking pretty positive.

I wish I could read about his recovery from a non-biased source. Some sources I read from gives the impression he can play this year, some other non-cowboy sources say he won't play this year.

I wish the team doctor would hold a press conference about it, or do a write up about it. Jaylon says he'll play, he says he feels good, but all players say that. Fingers crossed

Your title has a ring of authority not a ring of opinion. It's misleading.

It should be changed to "I think Jaylon Smith can play this year."

I don't think a doctor is likely going to be that definitive (or promise) on something like this. But the 1 inch a month part with 6 inches total sure makes it sound like it is possible.

I thought I read somewhere that he was raising his foot on his own now, which was the biggest issue from the nerve. if that's the case, there is no reason to believe a full recovery is not going to happen. I don't think he starts the season on the active roster, but he's a strong candidate for the PUP and to come back after week 8 if he's ready.

a question for the PUP experts. How long can you keep a guy on PUP without converting him to IR

Yeah it does, so it's kind of maddening to not know. I saw a bunch of Youtube videos with him working out, talking etc and from what I got is he started feeling sensations in his knee before he was expected to and that was a positive sign. Another thing is when people report about him, like espn or whatever, they say he suffered nerve damage. This isn't true. According to Jaylon the nerve in undamaged. The nerve was "stretched" either during the surgery or when it got injured but the nerve itself is fine. The nerve was traumatized and is reacting to the trauma, much like hitting your funny bone in your elbow but lasting a significantly longer time. So I believe that the nerve could start firing like normal any day now or it could take the 1 inch per month schedule. Or worst case scenario it stops firing for a while and the process is delayed.

But from what I understand is it's not out of the realm of reality that he could wake up one day and his nerve starts firing and he's good. That's unlikely, but it's a scenario that no one is talking about.

I don't know, I wish there was a clear cut time table and answer cuz I don't know how excited I want to be about him playing this year. Some things I read I get excited and some other things I read makes me think will see him in 2017.

Right but even in the one inch per month scenario, that means he should be healed by June or July. That's my disconnect and what I don't get.

Everybody say some prayers..........if he can play this year, he could be the steal of the draft.

From what I read the inch per month is accurate, however, the length is closer to 15 inches than it is 6 (which makes sense if we're talking from knee to ankle on a guy that size). IDK. I'm no expert just relaying what I had read.
