but let's get real, what were Jerry's options? Jimmy isn't coming back. Bill Parcells left. Dick Vermeil is retired. Bill Cowher just retired. Jeff Fisher is remaining in Tennessee. Even Martyball is in San Diego. Honestly, there were no big name coaches available. The media is criticizing Jerry for not hiring anyone of stature. Well the truth is no one of stature was available. And what that means is anyone you hire will be criticized to some degree.
I would have preferred Ron Rivera as many of you know. And yes, I was wrong about the Rivera hiring. My sources were wrong. I admit that so give me my helping of crow. But the reality is even guys like Rivera and Norm Chow don't come without problems of their own. I'm not happy with the Wade Phillips signing but it could have been worse. At least Phillips was coaching a 3-4 and he can potentially make our current defense much more aggressive. Even in his stints as head coach, his defenses were never really the problem. Philliips has never had an offense to go with his defense. In Denver, they had Elway and no one else. In Buffalo, he has a QB carousel of "GREAT" QB's like Rob Johnson and an old Doug Flutie with no noteworthy receivers or any other skilled players.
Sure, if you want to criticize Jerry for not taking a chance on Rivera or a guy like Norm Chow. I can understand that. However, I don't see this as a puppet coaching hire. If Tony Sparano was promoted to head coach, that would have been a Dave Campo move.
I think Jerry genuinely felt like he hired the best coach that was available for this team. He didn't hire Phillips to manipulate him. He was concerned about our 3-4 defense and Phillips was the best candidate because he would have preserved that style of defense. That was probably why he passed on Ron Rivera because Rivera insinuated that he might change to a 4-3 in his interview.
