I was right about taking Mark Clayton with the 20th pick

I am now more convinced than ever that we'll regret taking Marcus Spears instead of Mark Clayton with the 20th pick. Parcell's passion for defensive lineman blinded him into making the wrong pick. I know there were some in the war room who wanted Clayton. He would have been a great pick. He's going to have a great career.

I'm not saying Marcus Spears will not have a great career. I'm still hopeful that he will have a very good career. I'll just say that it seems much more likely that Clayton will change the outcome of many games over the next several years, while it would be difficult to say the same for Spears.

By the way, I also still think I was right when I said Mark Clayton will have a better career as an NFL WR than Matt Jones.

Mark Clayton is more refined as a WR while Matt Jones is just a freak of nature at the position. If Matt Jones becomes finely honed in a year or two, a lot of people are gonna regret not taking him.

I was also interested in picking up Clayton, but I think we did okay with Spears.

Now that Ware has made the people who wanted Merriman eat crow. I guess this will be the start of a bunch of who we shoulda taken instead of Spears posts.

Keep them coming. Hopefully it will work for Spears like it did for Ware.

I would have been happy with taking Mark Clayton at #20. There was too much depth at the DE position this year. We landed a good one in Chris Canty and there are an abundance of DE's in the draft next year.

last year we were pining for just 1 other good option besides Glover and Ellis on the Dline

now that we have a few on the Dline, we don't want them anymore

But left us weak in places where we need youth...

We didn't need six guys. We really just needed two. Ratliff isn't playing and neither is Burnett.

Ware as a DE/LB tweener and Canty as the other DE. Spears was a luxury we couldn't afford this year. As a result, the offense suffered.

I don't think Parcells and Jerry knew going into the draft that they would have the opportunity to draft Chris Canty. Or that late round draft pick in Jay Ratliff would show promise. Hindsight is 20/20, or so they say.

Edit: And to add to it, when we drafted Chris Canty, it was still an unkown that he would turn out okay. We knew he could be good, but we didn't know if he would recover from his injuries.

We needed Spears more. We still got good play from our WRs. Plus Clayton was hurt most of the season. His numbers aren't that good because of that. I think he had 400 yards on about 35 catches and 2 TDs or something like that. Which are good for a rookie but he's missed a lot of playing time. I think getting Spears was a big key to our defense being as good as it was this year. If we get back Henry and hopefully Nguyen we may have a defense that's as good as any in the NFL next year. There are plenty of good WRs out there. There's less good linemen on either side of the ball.

I didn't mean for this thread to be an anti-Spears thread. I actually like Spears and was excited that we got him. However, I liked Clayton more and felt he would be a steal at number 20. Seeing him come around the last few games has stirred up that memory of just how good I feel he will be as a Pro WR.

i think the cowboys did a good move got to young talented DE's w/ alot of potential, and a nt maybe in ratliff and P. Johnson, aint nothin wrong w/ shoring up one side of the ball. but clayton looks like he might b ok himself. glad we drafted the way we did.

***? Glenn had his best season of his career and Keyshawn played great all season long. Receiver is not a weak place and even though they aren't getting any younger, they're far from old.
