I hope Roy becomes as good as Darren Woodson, but thus far he is not. Please don't give me the speech about FS or SS. I'm talking about a total football player. Darren was a TOTAL football player. With every year that we have been unable to replace him, I value him more. Give Jimmy Johnson some credit for this brilliant draft choice.

By the way, I saw Darren today for the first time as a football analyst on ESPN (I don't know how long he has been doing it - I don't get to see ESPN much). He may be better than Troy, Michael, or Emmitt. Very sharp.

No, Roy is no Darren Woodson....and he probably won't ever be as complete a player as Woody was in coverage, run support, blitz, and especially special teams.

However, he can either get better in pass coverage or we'll cover for him...we could never trade him without crushing our cap.

He has his strengths...the defense just has to play to them. Unlike Woodson, I don't suspect we'll see Roy 1-1 with too many slot receivers.

yeah, roy cant cover like woodson did. if we had a safety that had good coverage skills, roy could roam back there as a head hunter and take people out ronnie lott style when they try to catch the ball. Roy looked great when woodson was playing with him for that very reason. He can be a game changing player if he is just allowed to be a hitter. but he's not a do it all safety like dawkins.

It's pretty amazing that Woody covered the slot receiver all those years, isn't it... And that's coming from a background as a linebacker in college.

I still think Roy isn't as horrible in coverage as some say, but I don't think he'll ever be Woody in that department.

Ahh, don't you miss the old days when we had a real safety? Don't you miss the old days when we had a real team?

IMO Roys needs to quit focusing on the big hit, and just focus on making the tackle. You don't have to blow the guy up on every freaking play. Just make the play

A lot of people aren't Darren Woodson. Roy is still a very good safety and a playmaker in his own right.

Some of ya'll would never be satisfied....but you don't deserve the right to ***ch unless you can do better yourself imo.

yep, Darren woodson was a very rare safety who could do it all, and over a very long period of time. very rare to see a player of his caliber. I still love roy though. we just need a rangy FS who specializes in coverage, and the problem is fixed.

I agree.

Roy came with a lot more hype, but Darren had the total package, size, speed, hitting ability, big-play ability, coverage ability, etc.

Darren was not quite the big hitter Roy is, but in everything else he exceeded what Roy has shown so far in his career. Can you imagine Roy in the slot on a slot receiver like Darren did earlier in his career?

I loved Woodson's game as much as anyone, but some of you are definitely practicing some revisionist history with him as well...Woodson was a liability in pass coverage the last 3 or 4 yrs he was here too, and rarely made plays on the ball.

Williams isnt great in space, but he does do a good job more often than not when lined up against TE's or 3rd/4th WR's man to man...he also had that amazing int vs Jimmy Smith when he was guarding him man to man 30-40 yds downfield as a rookie.

Woodson was a rare player, people need to quit comparing Williams to Roy because they were two different players...Woodson also had the benefit of playing for coaches that knew how to get the most of the players they had, rather than this garbage we see today.

Woodson had legit 4.3-4.4 speed, which alot of DB's simply dont have (even CB's). Thats why he was able to run with WR's (especially early in his career)

It will take ALOT for him to be better than Aikman.

I imagine so. Going from safety to QB is pretty tough. We've seen the trouble Danzler had going from QB to safety :)

I would take better coverage and making plays over knocking out a player any day. Now if Williams did this every game, that would be a different story.

Woodson was clearly superior in every way.

Couldn't you also point out the fact that during the late stages of his career when he was a "liability" that we were misusing him? He was matched up against slot receivers each year, when he really lost the ability to do so around 1996.

Coincidentally the same person that is our defensive coordinator now was the secondary coach for the last few years of Darren's career.

Woodson was a very good player and a great leader, but he wasn't nearly the playmaker Williams is.

I posted each of their respective stats through the first four years of their career in another thread.

It's more similar than the anti-Roy people think.

Woodson was solid, although i can remember him getting burned a few times deep.
