I will view this offseason in stages

The first stage here will be the DC hire. It seems, at least based on reports, Jerry is taking this DC hire seriously and not inclined to just grab someone he knows or can control. So for me, the first test/stage in this offseason and whether Jerry is serious is who they hire at DC.

The second stage/test will come in Feb/March when we have to deal with roster players. They should tag Pickens. They should look at cutting some obvious names - Steele, for example, being an obvious one. Too much cap space for such little production.

Third stage/test will be that initial wave of FA. The recent years has been the Cowboys sitting on their hands mostly at the start and grabbing either really cheap players right from the start or see what's left over later that they can get for cheap. Go get a player or two who is really good that you really want. Not just look over whatever warm bodies are left over that you cross your fingers and hope can play. The trickle down from here is that if they are aggressive in FA filling a couple of defensive holes, for example, they can be more liberal in the draft.

I'll take Jerry seriously if he can pass these three tests. If he does not, I expect 2026's season to resemble past ones.

The first stage is for NONE of us fans to get too excited about anything that happens with this team. We can hire every DC in the NFL, let's actually see how the defense performs

We can pick up free agents, and have a "good" draft, let's not get happy by the players we pick up/draft, let's see them in action, and take things 1 game at a time!!!! No more getting overly excited just to be let down!!!
