I didn't ignore anything. Spencer is still out. Say we pick up Hamilton before week one, and Spencer isn't ready to come back. Then in your scenario, Hamilton becomes the starter before ever being the back up.

.

Everyone knows Spencer is scheduled to come back Week 1. You've created your own narrative and in doing so created a straw man argument.

Well, Balt just placed LB Hamilton on IR due to a wrist injury according to Profootballtalk.

Hamilton flashed potential while he was here in camp last year. I hated seeing him get cut. But, turns out not much to rue here.

Yes, he is on the smaller side, but he played the run better than the much bigger Selvie against the Cardinals.

There have been some smallish DEs in the Kiffin type scheme (Pre-Draft Measurements):

Chris Clemons 6-3 236
Bruce Irvin 6-3 245

Robert Mathis 6-2 235
Dwight Freeney 6-1 266

The problem with both Gibson and Selvie is that they are both better suited for the Weak-Side DE position but the Cowboys really need someone that can play Strong-Side DE; otherwise, they're going to have to use DT Ben Bass as the backup at SDE.

Could not agree more with Selvie being better suited at weakside DE. Is Gibson better than either Chappelear or Fletcher at SDE? Bass has not impressed me at SDE either. Bass is much more effective in the Jimmy Jones role. What ever happened to Taylor? I thought he played well at SDE.

Taylor was either put on IR or given a injury settlement. I don't know what/how he got injured.

The Ravens seem really crowded at outside linebacker (3-4).

I think Hamilton would be perfect for us in this scheme. I would play him on the weakside and Ware on the strongside if Spencer was injured.

He would at least be an intriguing backup, who I think would be most suitable in a tampa 2 4-3.

I totally agree, he was really good in camp last year.:D

As I've said before Hamilton is not a linebacker. He is a defensive end. And being the 9th or 10th linebacker on the ravens, has little bearing on whether or not he could excel in a tampa 2.

so being not good has no bearing in playing tampa2? seriously? is tampa2 a magic dust of some kind that you can stick any ole piece of cr@p in there and it works!! wow. awsome....

A weakside defensive end in the tampa 2 has a lot less run stopping responsibility than a regular end in a 4-3 or an outside linebacker in a 3-4.

The primary purpose is rushing the passer, something that Hamilton excels at.

Has he ever shown to truly excel in the NFL as a pass-rusher?

excels at? where? when? in division 3 college!!! and has he even proven that he can rush the passer as a LB in 3-4 (essentially a stand up DE)? was he any good rushing the passer with the ravens, what gives you the feeling he should play over anybody we have on the team already? we had him here. he failed in being anything we would want to keep. he went to the ravens, he failed there. now change position and all of a sudden he becomes a Gem!!!

He may not even get cut by the Ravens.... And even if he does get is he a better option than Selvie or Vega as the back up?

not sure any of those two will make the team. not sure if he would be better than selvie. again, what has hamilton shown? selvie showed flashes..... with our team in preseason against better competition.

Do people not realize that training camp actually happens? The guy was a beast the entire time.

when? if he was a beast, why did he get cut? and if he is a beast and worth a dime, why is he considered a cut by the ravens, given they lost a bunch of LBs...

he is just a JAG, deal with it.

He is a defensive end from a small school, he isn't a linebacker. Learning a new position is difficult in the nfl. He has traits that would help us in the scheme we are running, it's as simple as that.

It would be like asking why Phillys corners were terrible in their zone scheme a couple years ago when they cut their teeth on man to man coverage. Not everyone is suited for just any scheme. I think Hamilton would be perfect in our scheme. You're free to disagree, but I think you're going about it the wrong way. His ability to play linebacker in a 3-4 has little to no bearing on his ability to play defensive end in a 4-3, especially not a tampa 2 4-3.
