There is still so much dribble out there about Romo and his contract I felt I needed to write up a little primer.

I've been wrong about a few of things but I've been bulls-eye about Tony Romo over the past two years. I peddled for Romo over Bledsoe--and most everyone scoffed. I shouted, pleaded and ranted that Jerry needed to sign Romo past offseason before his price skyrocketed. Again I was derided.

Now I again proudly declare the facts for those who want them. This is the truth for those who can handle the truth.

I am your most trusted specialist on the topic, and I AM available as a consultant-for-hire.

So let's review the 10 Most Important Facts that comprise the Idiots Guide to the Coming Tony Romo Crisis.

1. We have found ourselves a top 4 quarterback and we didn't even spend a draft picks and very little money to acquire him. That's good news! It's also now complicated.

2. Tony Romo is now a famous commodity, a Hollywood star. Don't be naive, fame changes almost everyone. When people become stars their view of themselves, of others, of money and of life change. An offer for a fifty-thousand dollar endorsement (instead of two-hundred) is suddenly an insult. Where Tony might have once been ecstatic to pay for the minimum to join the Cowboys -- he now makes more in endorsements than his current salary. The movie Jerry Maguire gives you a peek: big time athletes are part diva.

3. More money simply makes you want more money. Tony was very diplomatic with his recent discussion of his contract, saying how impossible it was to spend a few million dollars. Trust me, that line came directly from his agent or PR guy. Tony is now surrounded by advisors. That little statement is pure BS--Tony has given plenty of thought to how he'd spend his millions.

4. Tony is a big-play player. Feeling youth's invulnerability, he isn't afraid of risk. He isn't afraid of the big hit if he thinks he can keep the play alive. Do you think he is different when it comes to this contract?

5. People you have NO IDEA how much money Romo would get in the open market. Set aside the franchise tag issue for a moment. Many free agents get twice or even three times their real worth if they hit free agency. It is is shark feeding frenzy...and this would become the mother of all frenzies. Tony would become the richest player in NFL history and it wouldn't even be close. With the recent elevation of the salary cap there are lots of teams that could put together obscene packages. Seven, eight, nine teams would escalate this to eBay nirvana.

6. Dallas isn't the center of the universe. I know it's hard for posters around here to believe but it's true. Yes the Cowboys have the most popular franchise, but some don't care for the climate or prefer the bigger lights of other cities. Can you imagine Tony as Namath II? The Jets sure can and I assure you the commercial deals would be amazing. NFL players care passionately about their team but most can readily imagine themselves wearing different unis under different team banners.

7. Oh but the franchise tag! Let's look at what that is and what that isn't. Tony Romo is legally a Cowboy until the end of this season. After that he is legally bound by NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING. The league does feature an odd-ball franchise tag that regulates other team's access to signing these players, and stipulates a payment formula if the player VOLUNTARILY agrees to said terms. However, If Tony is willing to take a little extended holiday during preseason and the first ten games he would then be open for the bidding of all 32 teams. In 2008 Romo could sill play down the stretch and in the playoffs for a different team!

8. Those who think Jerry is the all-knowing God are sadly overlooking something. He's ALREADY horribly screwed this up. Romo might have been signed for 8-10 years at less than $10 mil per year this past offseason. That opportunity is toast.

9. Personalities are involved. Negotiation is in process. When you put big egos in a situation where they are talking big money it is COMMON for people to get petty, bitter, jealous, resentful...etc. These things often get crazy and take on a life of their own.

10. Even IF the Cowboys use the exclusive franchise tag--that's $14 mil per season, an amount that will greatly impact the Boy's maneuverability with other contracts. More importantly that just postpones the issue on locking down a guy whom you now must regard as your franchise cornerstone.

In all that writing you'd think he would have had at least a few FACTS but nope, it was nothing but his opinion.

That was a lot of typing for nothing but his thoughts.

So what you're saying is..............

Romo's gonna be expensive? Gotcha.

Everyone knows he's going to make more money because Jerry waited. And you know what? Jerry did the right thing. You want to give the guy 40 million and hope he's the guy, or give him 60 and KNOW he's the guy?

Romo isn't going anywhere. Jerry will pay him, and everyone knows it.

Oh, and quit tooting your own horn, I have been screaming for Romo to start since summer of 05.

Romo will be signed and the only talk about using franchise tags will come from ESPN.

I think you are dead wrong here. All Jerry would have to do is slap the franchise tag on Romo for another year, and then the year after that, and the year after that, and the year after that.....

While I'm not worried about Jones getting a deal done with Romo I don't have any issues with those who are worried some people worry by nature. Way I see it Jerry wants him here and Romo wants to be here and that is a great place to start and the fact that both sides are talking and working on this just makes me think it will get done. I don't think Jerry is a cheap owner because he has shown before that he is willing to pay top players in the past.

As much of a fun loving guy Tony is, i don't think he'd put up with that for more than one year...we'd likely see a lengthy holdout.

I don't think Jerry would do that year after year when it would be better cap wise to just get a deal done.

To my knowledge, we have never used the franchise tag on any player. Maybe someone can correct me on this if I am wrong.

I don't believe that Jerry likes to use the franchise tag because, in most instances, it isn't good for the team or the player. It is much better to simply sign the guy to a long term contract or let him go.

I can't think of a top player that got away from us that we wanted to keep.

... and if Jerry had signed Romo to a below market value (for a top 4 quarterback) contract ... do you not think Tony would be coming back to redo it after this year?

There's no harm in waiting till the offseason to sign a new contract.

It's drivel, not dribble.

While the two words are synonyms for one definition, they are not for the context in which he is using the word.

I also thought it was a good read. He made a GREAT point that I never even considered...

Romo is a gambler by nature.

You see it by the way he plays the game.

You see it in his decision to turn down more money from the Broncos as a rookie free agent to join the Cowboys (99.9% of guys in his shoes would've been a Bronco).

We all know how supremely confident he is in himself...

So don't you think he'd be confident enough in himself to say, "Okay, ya know what? Instead of signing a deal for $8 mil/year now... I'm gonna play out the year, play lights out like I know I can, and earn $15 mil/year at the end of the year."

People are going at Jerry's throat... "Why isn't he signed yet??? What's taking Jerry so long???"

But I don't think many of us considered the possibility that it could be Romo's side that is holding up the extension.

Jerry may have tried... several times... to extend Romo's deal, only to be turned away.

Now of course, Jerry won't SAY that to the press... he's saying what anyone would say in his shoes, wanting to save face. "I'm not worried about Romo's long-term future here... we like him as our future at QB... we can get the deal done before the year, during the year, or after."

Don't be fooled by Romo's "Aw shucks, money isn't important to me" routine. That's just good PR. He knows what he was worth before the season, he knows what he's worth now, and he knows that if he keeps up the outstanding play, he'll be worth even more at the end of the season...

And he'll want to be paid what he's worth. If money wasn't important to him, he'd have re-signed for 10 years at the vet minimum by now.

Jerry said he used it on Flozell once.

Very well put, I was going to say something along those lines. Seeing how Romo struggled down the stretch last season. It was a good thing to wait to see how he would bounce back.

As for playing for another team...what other team would he want to play for? What other team has the talent that he has in Dallas? What other team would he be able to win with?

Some people are looking too far into this. We know that Romo loves the Cowboys, why else would he turn down more money to play in Denver? And, we do know that what Jerry wants Jerry gets.

All the people who are whining about how Jerry should have signed Romo before this season are simply fools with no business sense.

Why? 2 reasons:

#1......You sign him to a decent deal before the season, and then you find out that the kid had a lucky streak last year and now he sucks and you start all over again with salary cap problems.

#2.......You sign him to a decent deal and he comes out blazing like he has this season. Now all the sudden Romo wants MORE money and a new deal because he's not being paid what he's worth. That's a much bigger distraction.

So far Jerry is playing this situation perfectly. So stop talking about it. Please?
