There is still so much dribble out there about Romo and his contract I felt I needed to write up a little primer.
I've been wrong about a few of things but I've been bulls-eye about Tony Romo over the past two years. I peddled for Romo over Bledsoe--and most everyone scoffed. I shouted, pleaded and ranted that Jerry needed to sign Romo past offseason before his price skyrocketed. Again I was derided.
Now I again proudly declare the facts for those who want them. This is the truth for those who can handle the truth.
I am your most trusted specialist on the topic, and I AM available as a consultant-for-hire.
So let's review the 10 Most Important Facts that comprise the Idiots Guide to the Coming Tony Romo Crisis.
1. We have found ourselves a top 4 quarterback and we didn't even spend a draft picks and very little money to acquire him. That's good news! It's also now complicated.
2. Tony Romo is now a famous commodity, a Hollywood star. Don't be naive, fame changes almost everyone. When people become stars their view of themselves, of others, of money and of life change. An offer for a fifty-thousand dollar endorsement (instead of two-hundred) is suddenly an insult. Where Tony might have once been ecstatic to pay for the minimum to join the Cowboys -- he now makes more in endorsements than his current salary. The movie Jerry Maguire gives you a peek: big time athletes are part diva.
3. More money simply makes you want more money. Tony was very diplomatic with his recent discussion of his contract, saying how impossible it was to spend a few million dollars. Trust me, that line came directly from his agent or PR guy. Tony is now surrounded by advisors. That little statement is pure BS--Tony has given plenty of thought to how he'd spend his millions.
4. Tony is a big-play player. Feeling youth's invulnerability, he isn't afraid of risk. He isn't afraid of the big hit if he thinks he can keep the play alive. Do you think he is different when it comes to this contract?
5. People you have NO IDEA how much money Romo would get in the open market. Set aside the franchise tag issue for a moment. Many free agents get twice or even three times their real worth if they hit free agency. It is is shark feeding frenzy...and this would become the mother of all frenzies. Tony would become the richest player in NFL history and it wouldn't even be close. With the recent elevation of the salary cap there are lots of teams that could put together obscene packages. Seven, eight, nine teams would escalate this to eBay nirvana.
6. Dallas isn't the center of the universe. I know it's hard for posters around here to believe but it's true. Yes the Cowboys have the most popular franchise, but some don't care for the climate or prefer the bigger lights of other cities. Can you imagine Tony as Namath II? The Jets sure can and I assure you the commercial deals would be amazing. NFL players care passionately about their team but most can readily imagine themselves wearing different unis under different team banners.
7. Oh but the franchise tag! Let's look at what that is and what that isn't. Tony Romo is legally a Cowboy until the end of this season. After that he is legally bound by NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING. The league does feature an odd-ball franchise tag that regulates other team's access to signing these players, and stipulates a payment formula if the player VOLUNTARILY agrees to said terms. However, If Tony is willing to take a little extended holiday during preseason and the first ten games he would then be open for the bidding of all 32 teams. In 2008 Romo could sill play down the stretch and in the playoffs for a different team!
8. Those who think Jerry is the all-knowing God are sadly overlooking something. He's ALREADY horribly screwed this up. Romo might have been signed for 8-10 years at less than $10 mil per year this past offseason. That opportunity is toast.
9. Personalities are involved. Negotiation is in process. When you put big egos in a situation where they are talking big money it is COMMON for people to get petty, bitter, jealous, resentful...etc. These things often get crazy and take on a life of their own.
10. Even IF the Cowboys use the exclusive franchise tag--that's $14 mil per season, an amount that will greatly impact the Boy's maneuverability with other contracts. More importantly that just postpones the issue on locking down a guy whom you now must regard as your franchise cornerstone.
