If all of our targets are gone, but Austin is still on the board, is that pretty much the best possible scenario for us to get maximum value in a trade down?

You should be able to get a good trade down and if not you take the guy.

It is a win win situation for him to be sitting there at 18.

I agree and for the record, if Austin is there and all top targets are gone, take Austin and don't look back. this kid can play

Trade down and run. I'd be very disappointed if we spent a first round pick on Austin. He ran a great 40 time but he isn't a physical freak in that he is small and has an average vertical leap. He can certainly run in the NFL but I don't trust his route running and ability to beat top tier NFL cornerbacks.

He would have to get op[en in the first two seconds, cause that is all Tony will have to throw.

Trade down would be the best option because someone will want to move up for him.

Who can tell me what the biggest difference between Austin and Desean Jackson is? Or more importantly, whats the difference between he and Marquise Goodwin who will surely be available later.

I've heard Austin is fast, but every time I've seen him I didn't get the sense that his speed was god-like, as many pundits have hyped it up to be. I actually didn't even think he was faster than Jackson until I saw the 40 times.

Basically what I want to know is this. What makes Austin a legitimate number 1 receiver? To me he seems like a weapon and not a team staple. One deserves a 1st round grade, the other doesn't.

If you watch Austin's videos, you can tell he's pretty fast. DB's would have an angle on him and still Austin outran them.

Right, fast is good and all, but is it 1st round worthy? Darius Heyward Bey was also fast and it hasn't done him much good thus far.

I agree, we have too many needs in other places to draft an undersized wr at pick 18.

Well, I think he might be a good compliment to Dez. Look at Alvin Harper, they drafted him in the mid 1st round when we had Irvin. Plus with Miles being injury prone...

I'm not saying draft him if Warmack, Cooper, or Richardson are there. But if those 3 are gone, I wouldn't mind him.

Yeah I'm not here to criticize. I just don't see what this kid does well other than 'run fast'. Or at least I haven't seen it or heard it myself. Just looking for some answers.

I asked this question in 2008 about Felix Jones and Jammal Charles.

We don't need a receiver. We have more serious holes to fill on this team. Romo's life is at stake once again

He's explosive and his agility is insane. The ability he has to change direction so quickly is crazy. His acceleration to his top speed is elite. Basically he has elite athleticism which is what you want in a receiver.

Here's a good overview:

STRENGTHS: Video game-like athleticism with rare change of direction skills. Lateral explosion is something special, doing an excellent job sticking his foot in the ground and bursting in any direction.
Knows how to change gears and turn on the jets to blow by others on the field. Very good start/stop ability with patience and vision to quickly survey and waste little time creating, always appearing to have a plan. Goes zero-to-60 in a flash and forces poor angles by defenders, following blocks and anticipating holes to set up his moves.

Very good space player and extremely shifty and elusive with the balance and deceiving strength to stay on his feet through contact. Smaller target for defenders to square up and a tough ballcarrier to tackle in motion. Good body control to make tough catches look easy with quick hands to pluck. Fearless and confident going up for the ball. Tough, gutsy and can take a hit, working hard to get every yard.

Versatile skill-set with experience all over the offense at running back and receiver, often used as a decoy. Dangerous return man and very good at weaving through defenders, playing with different gears that others on the field just don't have. Extremely productive with numerous school records, including career catches and all-purpose yards.

WEAKNESSES: Smallish frame and limited length with obvious durability concerns due to size. Will dance too much and get caught going east-west too much or in reverse, getting himself in trouble always looking for the home run. Smaller hands and will have some drops and double-catches, sometimes looking to create before securing the grab.

Strong effort as a blocker, but obviously limited in this area and can be tossed by defenders when they get their hands on him. Probably relegated to the slot at the next level. Too much all-or-nothing runs.

Compares To: Jordy Nelson, Packers -- Allen is very similar in that he possesses just enough straight-line speed to beat defenders on the outside. He wins with the size, toughness and sure hands to attack over the middle.

If Austin is there at 18 and the Big Uglies are gone, I'm calling Minnesota on speed dial and making a deal with them. They want Austin bad. Vikings have 23, 25, 52 and 83.

I would not mind putting together a trade for some sort of combination of those picks.

Would be exactly what we need in that situation IMO.
