If Chris Canty was smart... he would accept a Jay Ratliff type deal

For the life of me...I cannot understand why HE thinks HE is worth any more than what Jay Ratliff got. He is solid. He is professional. But he is not a special player. None of our DL are. But that is OK. This defense is for LBers to shine. We need solid, professional players for DL. And we have them....so sign now Canty. Because I don't think you would all of a sudden become Reggie White for another team.

He is going to be a UFA at the end of the season. UFAs get more money than RFAs. Simple as that. He's got far more leverage than Ratliff at this point

I think you posted this on TRR.

I don't think it's that. First of all, these deals go up every year. I'm sure that plays a part to it. He was also drafted higher, and his position typically makes more money than DT. He is, however, in a 3-4.

I think he WILL sign. I just think negiotations haven't heated up yet. Jerruh got Ratliff done in the middle of the year last year, too - right?

Give it time.

I, for one hope this guys signs. He's a warrior week in and week out. I can't see why Jerry would let him go. The guy was even here when he didn't have a contract.

Bingo. Don't think, for one minute, that he couldn't get a bigger deal in UFA than Ratliff got as a RFA. There are always teams out there, like Oakland, who are going to shell out huge deals to Free Agents coming off a winning team.

He was offered a contract? I must have missed that.

I think he will be signed by the end of october and I think columbo may get done too.

If he tests FA, is he projected as 4-3 DE or DT? If he projects as a DE, he could be looking at a big payday and may be a bit too expensive for us.

Please name one player that Jerry has wanted to keep that was ever "too expensive' for him.

how can someone who cannot get to the QB get big money as a DE? How can someone who cannot get to the QB get big money as a DT? How can the team look Ratliff in the eye everyday and give Canty more money? KNowing that Ratliff is better, whether he played DE or DT. Wouldn't that cause a problem?

I thought if a RFA signed his tender and was not signed long term before camp (I believe early July) he could not sign a long term deal until after the season.

Or maybe I am way out in left field??

The thing is, he is a solid player for us and in our scheme. Another team running a 4-3 defense may see him as a potential star (playing end) and throw a lot of money his way. Not sure if Jerry's willing to pay star money for someone who'll only be "solid" in our scheme.

Also, we have some depth at the position. I think how Hatcher plays this season will effect the final outcome to some degree.

At this point, Canty has to show he's got more. Spears appears to have improved.

Frankly, given what we saw in camp, preseason, and game 1, I'd rather lock Tank Johnson up, and go with a core of Johnson, Spears and Ratliff.

I really thought Canty would take a big leap forward this year (and Hatcher as well), but haven't seen much evidence of it. Of course, the season is still young.

Dude come on. Seriously. You nailed it yourself when you said the season is still young. But come on. After one game?

for what we ask our DL to do....we cannot pay this guy major coin. I personally think he is a tweener...which is exactly what you want out of a 3-4 guy. He would fail strictly as a edge rusher....so if someone wants to give him a 50M contract, I say play Hatcher and draft someone else. Then re-sign Columbo with the money you've saved

He is strictly a 3-4 guy IMO. That is what he has played since college. I don't think any team is going to pay him to be a pass rushing DE.

That said, I think he was one of the first to sign his tender wasn't he. Like someone said, have the Cowboys even offered him a contract? I just figured they were waiting to see how Hatcher and Bowen developed before paying him top dollar.

If Ellis can make the switch to LB, I think a much younger Canty can transition to a 4-3 rushing end. He's a little heavy for a 4-3 end right now, so he'll probably need to shed about 15lbs (which shouldn't be a problem for him).

pash rushing DEs are much lighter these days...in the 260 range...ones that are bigger are far more athletic and much quicker than Canty (see Julius Peppers).....Canty's job is to hold his ground at the point of attack and make plays rushing the QB occasionaly. Very valuable to this team and to our scheme...but he will never be a big sack guy. That is why I am saying I cannot see this team breaking the bank for him. We will have to break the bank for DWare..and those are the kinds of guys you should be breaking the bank for...guys that are special.
