If Colt does not go down, who are the National Champs today?

I picked Bama to beat Texas 20-17. Congrats to the Tide.

I would make this a poll if I knew how.

But after watching the entire game and the dynamics on both the UT offense and defense after Colt went down, I think Texas may have won that game with McCoy at the helm and become this year's fictional National Champs.

Texas could not convert on some great field position after Bama turnovers without Colt. The Texas defense looked like the air went out of it's tires after they learned Colt was down. They regrouped after halftime. And of course, Colt's replacement had 4 (or 5?) turnovers leading to 21 points. Not his fualt, the poor kid had no idea he would play.

It just looked to me like Texas would have won, but we'll never know...and injuries are part of the game. I did pick Bama in the first place.

Thoughts?

I would like to think Texas would have won but it is an unfair question because I think Bama strategy is different if Colt is in the lineup than it was with him out of the lineup. Alabama could afford being conservative knowing that by punting and pinning the freshman back deep that he would make mistakes. I would have loved to have seen the game with Colt in it but that's football. Still proud of the way Texas fought in that game

Who knows. Alabama doesn't run the same offense if it's a tight game but their QB looked pretty damn clueless every time he tried to throw, would have loved to see him have to throw.

I had little doubt about Texas ability to stop the passing game of Bama.

Still think Bama wins since Saban is a better game coach. But it could go either way.

Alabama.

Alabama was a better team.

I think Texas fans really need to move on and worry about next Season.

I take nothing away for Bama like many others yes I would have loved to see how the game would have played out with Colt in the game, after all he was a very big reason for the Longhorns success and after 1 series he is gone and the game is put into the hands of a Freshman going against the #1 team in the nation? Bama was the better team facing a freshman QB no doubt about it they may have won even had Colt played but we will never know because that did not happen.

Who knows? It would have been a different game. Still could have gone either way. You just don't know how things would have played out. Colt could have played worse than Gilbert.

Very true. That is why I think it is an unfair question. What took place is what took place and Bama won. So hats off to Bama on their win.

There is no question the Longhorns were at a disadvantage when losing Colt McCoy and their Center but I believe Alabama was just a better football team.

I mean, one could make the argument that Colt McCoy go hurt because the Alabama defense was physically better.

Also, calling a timeout after Newton's 9 yard run and then calling a shuffle pass with like 9 seconds until halftime was just stupid.

Texas also didn't have an answer for Alabama's running game.

As you stated, it is a question that will never be answered, that is why it is time to move on.

For sure we can't take anything away from Bama, because they did what they needed to get the win.

I think (but of course don't know for sure) that:
*Bama would have been more agressive on offense and that would help some
*Bama may have thrown a few picks as result but maybe not
*Bama does not get 4-5 Texas turnovers
*Texas would have thrown all over the field on Bama
*Texas would have run better as a result, plus Colt can run his sub did not
*Texas OC obviously gets more agressive...I think Brown had him do that after talking at halftime.
*Texas "D" would not have gone through that shell-shocked 2nd quarter before getting refocused at halftime
*etc......I think UT may have won, but we'll never know. Hat's off to Bama. Just a horrible turn of event for UT....they lost their leader. Kind of like Manning going down for the Colts on the 1st drive in the playoffs...they would be done too.

By the way. UT had won 7 straight post season games so they coach plenty good in big games.

By all accounts Gilbert did get plenty of reps this past month...mainly to prepare him for next season. Obviously he didn't get but a fraction of what Colt got...as should be the case.

As I said I would have loved to see Colt in that game. Face it Colt was a big part of the Longhorns offense all of a sudden your best player is gone of course it is going be tough to win. Add to that you not putting someone with much experiance in the game this is a freshman this time last year he was in high school now he is facing one of the best teams in the nation on the biggest stage. No doubt Colt McCoy would have given Texas a better chance of winning but we will never know because he was hurt so early in the game.

Feel free to wait until the first game of the 2010 College Season.

Still doesn't change the fact that Texas lost and the "What if" scenarios will never be answered.

Alabama was a better team and that is why they are National Champions.

nothing changes the fact that Gideon takes horrible angles on tackles and would have probable given up the long run to Richardson anyway.

From what I recall you already thought this before the game (as I did)....but really we can both agree that without Colt McCoy, Bama was the better team. Nobody knows otherwise.

Yes, as stated before, there is no question the Longhorns were at a disadvantage with Colt McCoy going down and their Center going down.

But again, one can argue that Colt McCoy was knocked out of the game because of the Alabama Defense.

Personally, I believe the UT Coaching staff and his father should have let him play in that game.
