Normally teams do not go out and hire a QB coach and promote him to OC if they were thrilled with their current OC. I agree with you why Jerry went after Garrett and hope this all comes together somewhere down the line.

True, this case was the exception.

Former player, who on the sidelines and I am sure in meetings as a player showed a natural understanding of the game at a young age. He comes from the Norv Turner school of thought, of which, Jerry had his most success.

The kid was moving up fast through the NFL Ranks and Jerry Jones had to get him before someone else did. It was no brainer.

Let me ask you guys a question, particulary the guys who say Jason Garrett should stay as he is almost certainly going to be the HC one day.

What happens to Jason Garrett and every other coaches career if he is still with the Dolphins? A team that has a very good shot at going 0-16.

Personally, I think that hurts the career of just about every coach on staff, especially the more visible ones.

This may not be the best example, but I just think you have to strike while the iron is hot if you are Garrett, especially if a job like the Giants opens up. To me, the Giants job is not a bad one.

As I stated in another thread for those saying Garrett should stay as he is guranteed the HC position with the Cowboys:

This is the NFL and there are only 32 Head Coaching jobs making the post more exclusive than the U.S. Senate.

Garrett is ann Ivy Graduate, so that should tell you that he is smart enough to know that you strike when the iron is hot as nothing is ever guranteed, including any promises Jerry Jones may make to him.

Jason Garrett would be extremely foolish to not take the Giants Head Coaching job if it is offered too him. He has a pretty good quarterback, a franchise that has some tradition of winning and it is a team he should be very familiar with.

I couldnt disagree more...the Cowboys position, whether it is this yr, next yr or even the yr after that is going to be far more attractive than the NYG...we have a younger team, a tremendous young QB who just signed a long term deal, and owner with an unquestioned passion to win and spend money to do so, plus we have an extra 1st rd pick this yr and a tremendous cap situation

he isnt going

He was the QB coach for only 1 season before we got him as the OC. The time frame was due to Miami giving Jerry 48 hours to cut a deal because Miami was going through their own coaching changes but it was not like Jason was getting a lot of attention from others so I'm not sure how you could say he was moving up fast at that time. I think Jerry high opinion of Garrett is based on Jerry knowledge of Garrett as you said but I don’t think there was too many other teams looking to get Jason last season. That clearly is changing now

The NFL allows a window of opportunity for coaches to talk with other team even during the playoffs. As the local reporter said it is also common that these coaches’ agents will sit down a talk with teams during this time. I don't want Jason to leave but I think I'm being a realist in saying yes it could happen. Just to say no it can’t happen and he is staying is a bit naïve

thats right, and the window is during the bye week

he isnt leaving, I wouldnt be surprised if its already something thats been agreed to...Jones himself said the other day he didnt think he was leaving this yr

I hope you are right. But again he does have a very good relationship with NY and if an offer was made while I hope he stays I would not be shocked if he took it. Promise in the future is one thing having the opportunity in your hands is another and I don’t think you can easily discount the real possibility that it could happen.

Well, I will back off somewhat on the statement that he was moving up the ranks fast, I don't really feel like doing a comparison of his rise as compared to other hot prospects.

The point I was trying to make was that it was clear the guy was going to have a bright future and it was only a matter of time before he got an OC gig and eventually a HC one.

I agree with you on that I think Jason future is very bright and I think Jerry knew this as well. I'm not so sure many others around the league knew this outside of NY and Dallas.

David, love the sig :D

So you would be happy with him succeeding Wade Phillips as HC after next season, even with the success Phillips has had?

Now I never said which job would be the most attractive. Certainly the Cowboys job is one of the more attractive jobs around the league. I just believe that there are only 32 (actually 31 as the Raiders job doesn't count :laugh2: ) and some of those jobs are very attractive.

Looks like San Diego is going to make the Playoffs, but if they didn't and they let Turner go, would Garrett be foolish to pass up the opportunity.

Tom Coughlin may be on his last legs in NY. The Giants job is an attractive job, you can win there too.

Really, my only argument is that nothing is ever guranteed and things can happen on a season to season basis that can affect one negatively as well as positively.

there ARE only 32 jobs, but not all 32 are "good" jobs...personally I dont see NYG as that great of a position, as Eli's mediocre play is handcuffing them and they are pretty much stuck with him...the fact is with him, he just doesnt have that much talent...he is painfully average...they have alot of positions they'll need to address as well, plus the fact you have to handle the NY media

I think San Diego owner/GM have already said Norv will definitely be back in 08

I really dont think there are going to be alot of openings

Who most of people assume Wade is going to leave after three years? If we do well, why would not Jerry extend him?

I'm sure Jerry has thought long and hard about this and may have a plan in place. He hinted the other day in an interview that he "worked too hard" to get Garrett here, to just let him walk away. Jerry was talking about Garrett's future as a coach way back in the mid-1990s. This hasn't been a one-year investment for Jerry, but multi-year.

Also, Sparano should be on some radars for head coaching openings next year. There's no guarantee he'll still be here.

I thought Wades contract was for 3 years.

It would be a tough decision to make after 2-3 successful years with Wade and Garrett to have to pick between the pair of them, which is what you would have to do.

Who I would pick would be based on the competence of the assitant behind them and the benefits that Wade or Jason have to offer.

In 2 more years will Stewart be able to sustain the Defense at the level that Wade has attained?

If Garrett goes will Sporano or Sherman be able to sustain the level Garrett has attained?

Those are going to be hard questions to answer - who is more valuable and which side of the ball needs more "coaching"?

1st off I hope it does not come to this and Jason stays with us but if it does happen who would you like to see get the job? Myself I think Ray Sherman would be able to step in and do the job and given the relationship he has with Owens as well as the other WR's on this team and given the fact he has a lot of NFL experience I think he could be the man

Its a trick question. Red aint leaving.

No trick. I want him just as much as anyone but if someone were to offer you a big contract and a HC position chances are you would take it. The ideal that because we are the Cowboys means Jason will never leave is not reality just as players do not stay just because we are the Cowboys. That is not reality that is a homer view point. I think Jerry will do what he can to keep Jason here and I hope Jason stays but for people to act as if there is no way he is going anywhere is naive
