If the rumors are true about BP trying to bring Groh to Dallas on condition of being the next HC..

and if BP as HC has another 9-7 season and this team still is a couple of years from being what we've been told is it's destiny..

..and we are faced with Groh as HC and BP as being gone..

..then I wouldn't bring Groh here.

Period.

A deal like that could kill this team after BP goes. If we need new FAs and new assistants to come to Dallas and Groh has some kind of longterm deal in place and they don't care for him as HC..

..we are right back to the Switzer/Gailey/Campo eras where we will implode trying to overcome the stigmas because nobody will want to play for Jerry Jones and Dallas and Groh.

Groh is a good coach, but he's going to be an extension of BP and that could be an abyss of futility. Especially if next year turns out anything like the last two years.

And we all know that's sharply possible.

I say NO.

It seems nobody wants to come and rescue BP right now knowing what pressure there is in Dallas to fix his pet project, the 3-4.

What kind of quality coach wants to come here with a lameduck HC and be charged with the responsbility of fixing the biggest problem this team has, Let BP get all the credit for it and then let BP collect $5-6 mil and skip town next year..?

Would any of us jump at that opportunity knowing the situation in Dallas with the HC..?

Now the only way I'd consider having Groh moving here as a DC with the intent to move up to HC is..

and this is a big IF..

IF BP was also going to take a job in Dallas after he left with the Cowboys as HC and then become the GM and take some or all of those duties over for a time from Jerry Jones and let he AND Groh work together to get the rebuilding completed over a 2-3 year period.

That way, BP would be responsible for Groh's performance as GM, he could still maintain a support platform at the executive level to help Groh with personnel decisions, coaches and even gameplanning if needed and scouting, etc.

I could see a significant advantage to the two of them forming a two-headed bridge b/w the field and the front office to ensure progress and continued progress according to an overall architectural plan based on solid football decisions in the Cowboys organization from top to bottom by people who have actually played, coached and had experience at the NFL level at being HCs and GMS..

As good as JJ has been at times as an owner and GM, he still lacks the experience of knowing what it takes to hire a HC because he's never been one. It's not his fault but it has been a handicap for this franchise at times when he had to settle for the Gailey and the Campos as HCs. Having not been a HC at any level before, he doesn't have first hand expereince on knowing the job he's hiring for and what it really involves.

If JJ would let the GM designation go and busy himself with just being the owner and minding the new stadium and go to the owner meetings and make his sponsorship deals and just be an owner for once..

..and let the team be run by his son, Stephen as Vice President, BP as GM and Groh on the field as HC..

..that might be the key to ultimate success long-term.

It would remove this dangling sword that's in play right now with "what happen's when BP leaves..?'

..to when BP leaves, there is a significant remaking of the front office on the horizon and quality people with a passion to win are going to be placed and BP isn't leaving and stability will be the answer to the instability being bounced around.

Frankly, Jerry needs to prepare for the movng aside for the day when Stephen will become Owner. With BP taking over at GM, that time would be closer, BP could work more closely with Stephen to show him the GM job and in a few years, if Jerry wants to reduce his role with the franchise, and BP eventually retires, Stephen has been schooled and ready to move it along for the next 20 years as the owner.

I see where alot of this could work.

Bringing Groh in as the DC is a first step. This makes good sense. He knows the 3-4, should be able to fix it and improve it. Bottom line, he'd have to produce, so that BP could leave by the next year and move to GM and the transition would occur.

If Groh fails, then adjustments would have to be made based on the reasons.

But overall, I see a master plan possibly that should be considered for those with the organization and I clearly see a way to have the Cowboys and those individuals involved create a win-win scenerio fro long-term success.

The best of times for this team were when we had a non-active owner in Clint Murchison who had a highly active GM called Schramm who had a defensive HC named Landry that ran the franchise like a football team first from top-to-bottom.

This could be done again with success. Not without some setbacks at times, but it could and should work towards long-term succeess and stability.

I think we have the principles to do this.

Do we we have the common goals and the desire to set about the journey..? Such a journey with all the dram ana d high stakes and chance at ultimate reward for Jerry, Parcells, Groh and the fans and players could make the famous Tolkein Trilogy look like a plain kid's comic book.

Let's see..

BP as Gandolf

Groh as Sam

Jerry as the ring bearer

Stephen Jones as Pippen

TO as Gollum

and Romo as..

Strider..!!

There you go folks.

Entertainment for a decade to come.

Maybe even a few championships

Jerry is never going to step aside and relinquish any duties. That is a pipe dream...It is a dream of mine that he would just go away, but he wont.

Parcells as gm in Dallas will never ever happen.

We just have to hope results get better.

The only thing I want from our new D Coordinator, and the next head coach, is the ability to make adjustments, be creative, and play to the players strengths. I honestly think if we do that, we'll win it all.

Al Groh will not be here. It's unlikely for a head coach at a Major D-I Program to leave that post for any position other than head coach in the NFL. Regardless if he is namrd by Big Bill as the HC in-waiting or not. It's not really an option.

Now THAT's a sentence!

Groh is a Parcells clone. The complaining on UVA message boards mirrors EXACTLY what you read here, especially regarding the passive read and react defense Virginia has played. I say "played" because Al Golden left Charlottesville after last season and wat replaced by Mike Londen, former LB coach (I think he coached LBs) for the Houston Texans on Dom Capers staff. And I guess that's not a ringing endorsement. But, Londen's thing coming into the job was agression, agression, agression, and while the '06-'07 Virginia defense still had some of the same problems encountered seasons before, it also led the ACC in sacks and was up the NCAA list in interceptions.

(How's THAT for a sentence! :D )

I'm surely not touting Londen for Dallas DC, but I think the change in approach he made demonstrates the difference agressiveness in a 3-4 difference can make. It's only fair to mention that Londen had Chris Long at RDE drawing constant double teams and a guy at LDE who led the ACC for much of the year and ended the season in the top three in TFL. The NT position was fairly vacant, though, so I think it evens out.

ANYWAY...

I do have a point, and my point is, we get an agressive DC and we'll see how good the Dallas defensive personel really is. I predict that it's very good.

How about this plan....

Let's just sit back, chug a few beers, and wait to see what happens. Burn brain cells with beer, not on over thinking and over reacting of things we can not control.

It's the off-season and beer doesn't quench my thirst for Dallas Cowboys football. Sad? Maybe. But that's just the way it is.

It's admirable that you tried to articulate this, even if it gave some of us a headache.:D

What the master plan really boils down to is:
  • Jerra stays "just an owner" and manages the money, concerns himself with marketing etc.
  • we make a complete break from the lemon-chewing, man-up, man-boob, grind-it-out, make no adjustment approach
Well, as some have pointed out already, bullet#1 is against Jones' nature. My personal opinion is that he'll name himself coach someday before completely admitting that his football sense is at best a bit counter-productive. May as well wait for Alzheimer's.

Bullet#2 goes hand-in-hand with bullet#1, in the sense that a leap of faith is required, to someone with promise but no true pro track record, because those that have the track record have little reason to leave what they have to work for admittedly the highest-profile team in the league, because of having to deal with the possibilities of bullet#1.

Yes, next year may be better changing little to nothing, just as we've said the season before this, and so on. It just depends on how long we continue to believe it.

There's also an old saying about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

Did anyone actually read that whole post?

I skimmed to the end and when I saw Lord of the Rings characters mentioned I figured skimming was a pretty good call.

I'm a season ticket holder at UVA. We do not want him brought to our team as a potential successor to Bill. Al Groh appointed his son Offensive coordinator for gods sake - ZERO experience as an offensive coordinator. UVA's team has continued to slip the last couple of years and the administration opted not to extend Al's contract this year. I think he's got 2 years left at UVA. We don't want another Bill clone after he leaves, especially this clone.

As sick of him as I am as a UVA fan, I would finally accept the fact that I am totally cursed in all aspects of my football life, if this were to happen.

In any case, I don't see how JJ could "guarantee" Groh the HC job today after BP left in a year. Based on what? He hasn't proven anything with the Cowboys to-date.

Sure, IF Groh did a solid job as DC, he would obviously be a candidate to replace BP. Nothing more.

As such, I'm not sure why Groh would take this opportunity as a DC (i.e., no guarantee of being next HC) if he has security and a hefty paycheck at the college level.

I don't see this happening.

In fact, I'm not sure any really good coordinator will come to Dallas knowing that this likely is BP's last year coaching. There is no job security. Heck, I wouldn't switch jobs if I knew my new boss was leaving in a year and that I had no guarantee that I'd be his replacement.

We'll probably end up with either/both Bowles and Pasq. as DC.
