If Jim Leonhard cannot be hired til Denver is out

I think he meant or at least he should have meant that if they wait on Leonhard and he doesn't take the job and now they seem stuck they could just go down the hall and get white cotton as a parachute Just an emergency last minute decision.

I don't think that's gonna happen because I don't think that's their number one option I think they like Jones just as much they're interviewing a lot of people today They're making sure they have enough interviews and people aligned and know where everyone stands that if they don't get their target one or two they'll hire somebody besides somebody in our own house....
Nine head coach openings right now means a lot of staffs to be built. Top DC, and OC, candidates can count on a variety of opportunities. Top head coaches will attract top coordinators in hopes of getting HC opportunities over the next few years.

Even a goofball like Sirianni has a better track record in recent years launching coordinators into HC opportunities than Cowboys head coaches.

I mean personally I would hire him now, but according to the rules he cannot be hired til Denver is out of playoffs/SB.

My question is this: what if they make it to Superbowl, would we not risk him saying nah I am going over here and then all the other top guys would possibly already be snatched up.

I would love to have Jim as our DC as he checks all the boxes, and would be willing to put some risk into waiting to get him, but what if we wait too long and then we are left with garbage like Whitecotton or Gannon?
That's the risk you take if you have a guy you really want. If they think they have him and he changes his mind because of a better offer, then we'll have to deal with that at the time. I'd honestly rather go that way if No-Schott really wants Leonhard than to settle early on whomever we can get.

Look you're worried about that but that doesn't mean the Cowboys during their Zoom interview and maybe other communiques haven't set up a second interview, and told Jim if he's interested they would hold the spot for him, and he should not agree to the second interview if he wasn't strongly interested,

that way they can get rid of this but just because he may go deep into Playhouse don't mean you can't have some kind of deal in place,

we call a contract in principle..

Believe that's what these zoom interviews are for These are basic contact to find out if they're interested and tell them you're interested but you would want them at that interview to at least commit to a second real interview in person if they had strong interest if not you want them to be honest and say look I'm not a good option because I'm hoping for something different that's it that's why these professionals do this behind the scenes and we're not aware of what's being said or done or how much communication is actually happening.

I always like your replies as you are pretty much always spot on.

Hes not old enough for us and he aint worked here before
Another potential problem with Ol Jerry at the helm is, what if Ol Jerry had to overpay a coach, outbid another team for his services. When the right coach is there to turn this organization into a winner once again, what would Ol Jerry do. There is no cap on coordinators in the league, if I am the GM I am hiring the best defensive coordinator and paying the man.

Typically if there is no interest or a coach has decided not to move forward they would let the franchise know so they don’t wait for them just a common courtesy

should be ok.

Coaches go on vacation after the SuperBowl anyways.

League year starts in March.

Exactly, I'd get Leonhard anyway. If that's who Schotty wants, and it seems he does, then that shouldn't matter. If anything, it gives Leonhard more credence for us.

Clearly the rules have changed.

I remember in January 1993 the Cowboys played the Bills in the Super Bowl and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt had already taken the Bears' head coaching job.

Maybe because it involved a promotion? I admit I never paid a lot of attention to coach hiring rules.

You can’t hire him but you can talk to his agent
Exactly how would you hire him now?
you can’t technically hire him now. But his agent you can talk to and feel out what it’s gonna take

Oh well.. if all the good DC's are gone.. I'm pretty sure Rex will still be sitting there.. some people want him.
