If Our Backup CBs Can't Get the Job Done

Last year Seattle pulled Pete "Freaking" Hunter off the streets, plugged him in that week and got by.

If our guys can't play at least as good with all of Training Camp behind them it will be a travesty. They should play better.

Translation...while these guys won't measure up to T-New's status, I think it's premature to worry so much about them that it gives us ulcers and makes us adopt the fingernail diet.

The problem isn't that our backup CBs can't play, or that they don't belong in the NFL, or that our GM is a joke because he didn't realize this. The problem is that they aren't as good as Newman. Few are, we'll be fine.

This team goes as far as it can upon how well the O-line opens holes for the RBs and keeps Tony Romo vertical. Anyone who thinks our defense will be Swiss cheese and offenses will put up scores like a pinball machine is out of his mind. All they need to do is play steady until Newman is back and the offense will keep things from sliding down the hill.

Stop the panic, the sky isn't falling, the end isn't near. The start of the season is near and even with some key player's dinged up, I can't wait. Bring on the Giants. It's going to be a long 11 days if the whining doesn't stop and I'm out of cheese.

Maybe Julius Jones can do it.

After all, he is a robot. Maybe we can re-program him into a CB.

If we play almost exclusively man coverage without giving the corners any help like the Texans game, we're toast. The good news is, no one would be dumb enough to actually call a game like that in a real situation.

No, cause then we'd have to hear about how Barber should be getting more snaps on defense too....

Hos, I agree.
But, too, I think the worry warts around here (me included) see CB as NOT a deep position. Hence the worry beads, rosaries and heavy drinking. Well, the last would occur anyway, but I digress.

Hos, Newman will be missed for however many games it takes.

One way to reduce the pressure on our CBs will be to
RUN THE BALL AND RUN IT WELL.
El Robato will needs plenty of help from el Barbero and Tyson T.
Ball control, as we call it in the old contrrrry.
Long, sustained drives with Witten playing a key role.

No thanks, necessary. I am here to help.

I agree and would add Phillips knows defense and he will adjust as need be. I think way too much panic has taken place because of the Houston game

I usually just lurk, but this whole situation is past the point of ridiculous and I feel the need to say something. T-New's injury is not going to prevent us from being successful this year. If any of you would like to take a reality check, look at the starting secondary for the Chargers last year. Wade knows what he is doing and will make the necessary adjustments, if they are required.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and realize that it's not yet the regular season and the wheels aren't off the train just yet. For all we know, T-New if going to be playing and playing well against the Giants and if he's not, so be it.

Some of you guys would make coffee nervous. Just chill. :)

I agree, I don't think we'd play the same scheme had it been a regular season game. Yes, TNEW is hard to replace, but I would hope that we could game plan to better work around his loss.

I think so too.

Oh, and plus I heard Wade Phillips say during his press conference that he wouldn't have played it that way in a real game and said he would have gotten Glenn some help.

So, I'm pretty sure he'd make an adjustment or two.

Wade has plenty of experience tweaking mediocre secondary, look what he did in San Diego. All will be fine and the beer will flow cold come Sunday!!!:beer2:

The purpose of our game plan was to expose the CBs. That makes sense when you're evaluating talent, but does it make any sense in a regular season game?

Even without Newman and *with* Roy Williams, our coverage should still be better just for the fact that a pass rush can immensely help pass coverage. It's easier for an average CB to cover for 3 seconds than it is for a great CB to cover for six!

I think in the long run this team is better off letting Newman get properly healed and not rushing him back and making due with what we have. We need a healthy T. Newman for the playoff run more than we need him for 16 games with a gimpy foot all year long.

Hos, are you suggesting we pick up Pete Hunter?

:p:

I kid, I kid!

The blame for Newman's injuries lies with Quincy Carter. Moreover if we had traded Dexter Coakley for a first rounder, we could have used that pick on a corner and we wouldn't be in this situation to begin with.
