If Spencer has problems with the run...

... why couldn't we just put Hatcher or Ratliff in at his spot on obvious running downs? If the offense then tries to pass while one of those guys is in, they should be able to tie up the TE well enough to keep him from getting off the line and into a passing route. So rather than asking those guys to cover the TE, just have them keep the TE from being a factor.

What are the cons to trying something like this?

or we could sign Bill Parcells to a 10 year, $50 billion deal and start him at CB

or we could sign Vinny Testaverde to a 15 year, $100 billion deal and cut Terence Newman and Demarcus Ware to make room for it

Or if we hadn't trade with Cleveland(Quinn), we would have traded up to get a corner, and Spencer would have been a Bird-and EVERYONE would have gone ape**** here.

Not sure there is such a thing as a forced rushing down. But anyway, that's basically a 4-3 line up, except you wouldn't have a good weak-side linebacker for it.

They'd probably audible and motion the TE (Shockey) out wide and go into a hurry up offense. You'd be forced to play a makeshift 4-3 front, where your line is Canty, Ferguson, Spears, and Hatcher. I guess the downside is there could be times when Ware could be forced into covering Shockey. If a safety were to come up to do it, that leaves a corner in man to man or just an easier block for Shockey.

we could move Bobby to OLB and play him on running downs

Don't be silly. Who would ever, ever, ever do that?

We need to put some DL in at OLB on run downs. I mean how often could they really try to get Fergie or Hatch in coverage? Surely not THAT many... Besides... I bet Hatcher is really terrific in coverage now that his hammy is right.

So hairic is the only one who is able to see the big picture, and the rest of you go out of your way to not provide any useful discussion .......

Yes, Ware might end up in coverage some and that's not where we want him to be most of the time, but we would be dictating the play to the offense. Ratliff or Hatcher coming off the edge would be downright scary, and I think there are creative ways to minimize the negatives of this alignment. Carpenter has not shown that he is much better against the run or working off of blocks than Spencer is, so I'd rather keep him at ILB.

Oh yea, we'd be dictating to the offense alright. We'd be dictating that the offense would pick us apart by throwing the ball to the backs and TEs with 300 pound DEs in at LB.

As someone said, thats moving to a 4-3. Its unlikely Wade uses it. I think some think you mean switching Hatch/Rat to LB which isnt what ur suggesting? Is it?

One thing I noticed about Spencer was his high number of tackles and tackles for losses at Purdue. This leads me to believe he'll be fine against the run.

Why not use Carp at OLB instead? He's played there before, and he did well vs. Seattle, for example.

But regardless, it looks like we're going to have to take our lumps with Spencer until he gets more comfortable in the scheme. Hopefully by mid-season he'll be a lot more comfortable - and Ellis should be back by then as well.

Wasn't our run defense outstanding in the preseason? Except against Houston...

Lets get this straight, you want to replace a 250lbs outside linebacker who can run like the wind, with a 300lbs defensive end who cannot?

He could play both sides of the ball. Hell, now that we have big, who needs Romo. He is big enough to pass block for himself if he was playing QB.

Chuck Norris could be our starting SOLB, but the NFL won't allow him into the league... it's part of the program to protect QBs.
