If the Jets gave Barber an offer

similiar to Turner's what would you do? Dallas could match it and keep Barber long term but that would mean some serious restructuring of contracts and maybe delaying things like Owens, Newman etc......

They could let him go and hope and pray that McFadden made it past Oakland and that they could sign him in time so that he is ready by the start of the season.

My point is that Barber is not a done deal and there is a big difference between offers from a team in the top third of the draft and the bottom third. Also, Barber for all the good he brings has limitations particularly in speed. The holes he gets that give him a 30 yard gain many backs would take it to the house. Inversely many holes he is given and turns into a four yard gain, many backs are tackled for a loss. He also has a running style that wears down defenses, but again inversely wears him down.

The losing scenario in all this is if Barber gets a huge offer that they cannot or will not match from a team in the bottom of the draft that doesn't allow them to draft a RB to replace Barber. Then Dallas has to wheel and deal to get a McFadden and everybody dealing with Jones will know that he is desperate.

Interesting thread.. I doubt Jets would be willing to do it though but I think if it happened Jerry would hope that McFadden would fall to us

If anyone in the top 5 were to offer Marion a contract then I'd let him take their deal and take their #1 pick and their 3rd round pick. Thats really the only way I'd do it is if someone really high in the draft wanted him so we'd get their high first rounder.

Lose Barber, and 2 first rounders for Darren McFadden?

Um, no. You re-sign Barber. You dont blow a pro-bowl running back and 2 first rounders of a player who has never stepped on an NFL field.

I have to agree with you here.

OK, what if a team like Houston around 18 offered a huge contract that is difficult for Dallas to match? 18 isn't high enough to guarantee McFadden, Mendenhall or Stewart.

That is why I picked NYJ because Oakland could and IMO should take McFadden and then you aren't getting value taking Mendenhall or Stewart at 6.

Well then it depends on what they're offering him of course. If someone is going to give him insane money then, yeah, I think you have to let him go. But if someone is going to offer him insane money I'd really hope they're at the very least inside the top 10 and hopefully the top 5.

insane money is in the eye of the beholder. I think Atlanta gave Turner "insane" money. Dallas would be stretched matching that offer. They would have to restructure Romo's contract and possibly put off Newman and Owens.

No one's going to give up a 1st and 3rd, especially not a team with a high #1.

Is there a limit on when an offer can be made to a RFA.

Can a team make an offer to barber after the draft?

there is a certain time frame. I think (but might be wrong) like the second week in April

I agree, if it's a high first rounder, then I imagine Jones may let them have Barber and take their high first round pick and their third as well.

You have to look at it another way. If Barber was on a different team, would you give up a big contract, our #28 and #92 for him? I wouldn't. If anyone signs Barber to an offer sheet, I guarantee Jerry doesn't match and takes the picks.

Whoever signs MBIII would have to give us their first & third for this year's draft. The Cowboys would end up with 3 first, 1 second & 2 thirds. Jerry's not going to trade up for McFadden cause we can't put him under our cap. He'd probably trade one of those first rounders to Miami or Atlanta for their 2 second rounders. He might even trade our first rounder to another team for their first rounder in 09. Frankly this whole subject is too hypothetical to worry about yet.

i would still pass. look at it this way... the rationale was that the jets were offering MB3 too much money to match it. What do you think it will take to sign a top 5 pick? the answer is more than turner's contract. thus, you go with the sure thing which is MB3. McFadden may be the next ki-jana carter or lawrence phillips.
