Is there a limit on when an offer can be made to a RFA.

Can a team make an offer to barber after the draft?

April 18: Signing period ends for restricted free agents.

April 25: Deadline for old club to exercise right of first refusal to restricted free agents.

April 26-27: NFL draft, New York.

Whoever signs MBIII would have to give us their first & third for this year's draft. The Cowboys would end up with 3 first, 1 second & 2 thirds. Jerry's not going to trade up for McFadden cause we can't put him under our cap. He'd probably trade one of those first rounders to Miami or Atlanta for their 2 second rounders. He might even trade our first rounder to another team for their first rounder in 09. Frankly this whole subject is too hypothetical to worry about yet.
jerry has 2 months to extend and restructure contracts.

Im done listening and reading, its time for me to respond. To all who say barber does not have speed, and act as if our o-line created monsterous gaps for him , i think its time to review the footage. Barber had to make his own holes, run to the outside, knock people on their behinds. He earned every yard, and rushed on the superbowl defense that shutdown rb's. Sure you can argue that he was limited in the second half, then i would ask you to analyze what our defense did. They always limited players in the second half, that's what a good defense can do. The bottom line is that barber brings an energy and will that no one else has. Id take him over mcfadden, over peterson, and over anyone right now. The fact of the matter is, Marion Barber is a Dallas Cowboy.:starspin

Stewart reminds me a lot of Barber. I'd love to get the guy. (But we won't.) And he's faster. I don't see anyone giving up a 1st and a 3rd for Barber. But I do think Barber can be replaced. If they're going to take him I hope they take him this draft. There are some decent RBs in this year's draft.

Barber has performed well against every one of the last championship defenses. Indy and Giants, he's done it when it matters. If barber had the holes other rbs have he'd have more yardage. Instead he paves his path. I like our oline, but they arent exactly great at creating gaps. Peterson didnt even reach 100 yards on us, against a decent run defense, barber will run over anyone.

This year the last day to sign a player to an offer sheet is Friday April 18th. Clubs have one week to match the offer or lose the player (deadline April 25th). Obviously these dates are in place because the draft pick compensation has to be in place prior to the draft on Saturday the 26th.

I love Barber don't get me wrong. But Peterson just won OROY with T. Jackson at qb and NO threat of a passing game, whatsoever. I'll take AD.

I think Barber has become too enamored with running over guys. It gets the team and the crowd fired up, but the idea is to get past the defenders without contact and get up field. He doesn't use his blockers very well and relies on the stiff arm too much. I love his spirit, but he needs to be part of a platoon.

If anyone in the top 5 were to offer Marion a contract then I'd let him take their deal and take their #1 pick and their 3rd round pick. Thats really the only way I'd do it is if someone really high in the draft wanted him so we'd get their high first rounder.

I'd be for it if I felt like I could half way trust Jethro with the draft! So I guess I instead would have to pay the "Barberian" to do his barberic acts in a Cowboys uniform!;)

IIRC we won't get a 1st and 3rd for Barber, as we only tendered him at 1st round compensation which saved us about 500k on the cap.

I believe it would be devasting to loose Barber for the mere fact it would leave us needing two good rb's instead of one.....and they are not that many proven runners to pick from.

Durability will also be a big question cause he causes alot of contact. That is one you need a compliment for him. If another team offered him a good deal, I think Dallas will not match. Then they could make a move for Mcfadden.

similiar to Turner's what would you do? Dallas could match it and keep Barber long term but that would mean some serious restructuring of contracts and maybe delaying things like Owens, Newman etc......

They could let him go and hope and pray that McFadden made it past Oakland and that they could sign him in time so that he is ready by the start of the season.

My point is that Barber is not a done deal and there is a big difference between offers from a team in the top third of the draft and the bottom third. Also, Barber for all the good he brings has limitations particularly in speed. The holes he gets that give him a 30 yard gain many backs would take it to the house. Inversely many holes he is given and turns into a four yard gain, many backs are tackled for a loss. He also has a running style that wears down defenses, but again inversely wears him down.

The losing scenario in all this is if Barber gets a huge offer that they cannot or will not match from a team in the bottom of the draft that doesn't allow them to draft a RB to replace Barber. Then Dallas has to wheel and deal to get a McFadden and everybody dealing with Jones will know that he is desperate.

the trick is - would a team draft barber with the #6 pick of this draft?

i love barber, but i don't think i'd do it. he's been a fantastic backup back that makes people wonder. he never got to "sit" julius down till the playoff game and he did run out of gas towards the end.

i want to keep barber, but if someone offers him starter money and a high 1st round pick to us, i think we let it go.

someone could out $ us right now and our "defense" is getting a 1st rounder in return. i like what jones has done w/hamlin and barber - both very good players and had a fantastic year. now, before we pony up the starter money, do it again for hamlin and then have barber be a starter and make sure he's worth that money.

if someone like the jets want to take that gamble, i'm inclined to let him go and trade down, still giving up mcfadden and getting more lower 1st round picks that are more $ friendly and fill more holes.

The thing that I don't understand is that if you are sitting in this draft and need a RB at some point you have to look at Barber and say hmmmmmmmm don't you?

I mean he is a proven beast and history shows that the draft is a crap shoot. If you were the owner of a superbowl contending team today and you had what you thought was one main hole on your team and that was at RB. Do you go with a rookie or someone like Barber? At some level in the first round I would have to go with Barber. If you are going to draft a RB anyway and pay a rookie big bucks at some point I would rather pay big bucks to a proven player.

Canty is in the same boat. If Canty was in this draft as he is now, not then, wouldn't you think he would be a first round pick? At least late in the first round?
