If we can cut Aikman and Emmitt, we certainly can cut Romo

Obviously they can cut him and if they decide that's the way they're going to go then they'll do so.

It's not out of the realm of possibility.

I know I was quite a bit younger when it happened to Aikman and Smith but I was pissed beyond belief when they cut those two guys. I didn't even care that they couldn't play as good anymore they were icons of the franchise and to me they deserved better then being cut.

But, as you learn in life the older you get, that really is just the nature of the business. It's all part of it.

Nick Eatman makes a great point. If Romo is kept, it has to be clearly understood by him that he is going to be the backup. Romo would definitely crush Dak in an open competition to be the starter.

By all accounts I've never heard anyone say Dak looks great in practice.

I'm sure its just another reason he fail to the 4th.

He had a perfect blend of immense talent that you can't really measure on the field.

Why cut him? I know I am in the minority but I let his contract run out. Not paying anything for Dak now anyways and no need to do so till 3 years from now.
If there was no such thing as a salary cap then I would be all with you in the sense that we make so much as an organization that you can keep him as one of the best backup QBs in the league...

But Im sorry if Dak is who were rolling with now and into the future we need to relieve some savings from romos contract and put that into QUALITY talent infusion for the defense...

Rod has been a wizard with these no name guys he could use a few more thorough breed horses to help with his mules he has playing above their level

You're being polite. I don't know or want to proclaim how Romo makes his exit out of Dallas but I agree with you that it will happen. I think some of the "practical" reasoning being thrown around discussing the pros and cons of allowing Romo to go elsewhere involves some erroneous rationalizing that Romo is "just another player." He isn't and will be treated as such. Still, what's most bizarre (proper phrase by the way) is how vocal some people are against Romo's exit presently after SO many years of some people shouting "Romo Must Go!" The contraction is incredible.

I feel like Romo values the Dallas Cowboys as an organization more than Troy does. Aikman always seems bitter.

Why would we cut Romo??? If Dak is indeed the clear cut starter...why wouldn't we try to trade Romo before the start of the next season? I would think a team like the Jets might be interested.

It's just a perception that could be right or wrong but they are both true Cowboys at their core.

DAL actually hurts their cap situation by cutting Romo in the Spring

The only way to help the cap and help Tony move on is to re-do his contract to add some guaranteed money(0m of his scheduled 14m is guaranteed right now)...it will protect him if he is traded or kept as a back-up

But nothing will be resolved right away that doesn't leave a 19.6m cap hit for 2017
If he is traded, cut or retires before June 1st the entire 19.6m in Dead Money hits the cap

You nailed it.......the main point is that DAL won't cut a valuable trade asset just to be nice

They wouldn't tear up a 1st or 2nd round draft pick.......why would they just let Romo go somewhere else to beat us someday.......we did it with DWare and instantly regretted it when he got multiple offers within minutes
That's not how it worked. They had a restructured contract on the table for Ware. They told Ware and his agent to take the pulse around the NFL for what he could get. Denver offered the most and they released Ware. So yeah, their might've been multiple offers, but he was already going to Denver.

I could see this scenario playing out the same way, although I don't think a restructure will be on the table for Romo.

I cried when Aikman was cut. I cried when Irvin retired. About the only time I've ever cried over anything Dallas Cowboys-related. Didn't even cry over Woody and y'all know I love that man.

I'm with you. I cried with Aikman, Irvin, and Emmitt.

Those were crushing to me.

I will no doubt be crying when Witten hangs them up.

Yeah, Dak looks solid in practice but nothing really special.
By all accounts--and i mean all the players, coaches , and sideline writers--Romo looks far better every day in practice. Not even close.
Turn on those game lights though, and Dak is they type of player that closes that gap really quickly.
Definitley the very defintion of a gamer (but not the type that does not also do his homework).

The irony is that Romo was also more of gamer in his early days too. In shorts, there were always bigger stronger guys that looked good spinning it.
But come game time (or scrimmage time, according to his teammates), he would then tear up some defenses.
I'm sure he has great appreciation of Dak.

There are a couple of problems with that scenario: Romo is due huge money next season, so it's hard to trade him with that contact. The only way he's likely to get traded would be if he's willing to re-work his deal. He's not doing that to go someplace he doesn't want just because you want a 7th round draft pick. And he can always just decide to retire rather that let the Cowboys screw him over in an attempt to get a backup - you think any team would trade for a guy who says he's not going to show up? Then there is the fact that Jerry would look like a complete *** for forcing that issue, especially after the way Romo has handled this, when the team really has no leverage other than Romo's competitive nature.
It's my understanding that we are on the hook for most of the contract, trade or no trade. There will definitely be teams interested in him if healthy. I think we could easily get a 3rd or 4th rounder for him, but like I said, I'd take a 7th before I'd release him.

I'm just saying some people show more respect to Romo than both Aikman and Emmitt. Aikman and Emmitt won 3 rings. I don't understand Jerry, he has no issues cutting 2 of the greatest players in Cowboys history but acts as if Romo won 2 or 3 rings himself.

Don't mind me it's just an early morning rant.

Many feel sorry for Romo because he never won a ring and are living in the moment. Most who don't show as much respect for Aikman or Emmitt weren't around during their championship years. I've seen posters claim Aikman wasn't that good and they were in diapers when Aikman was winning SB's. lol Aikman being cut came down to money and his health. Emmitt being cut came down to age, decline and money. Romo being cut will come down his lack of availability due to an assortment of injuries over the past 2 seasons, age and having a new franchise QB.

I liked Emmitt, but he wasn't tear-worthy to me. lol Aikman was always my dude. Irvin, I liked after he visited my high school one time. After that, I was a fan.

It would not surprise me if Witten gives the most moving retirement speech of any Cowboy ever connected with the franchise. Just a feeling of mine.

In a football life Troy says as much, how the last half of his career wasn't fun anymore.
On the other hand I think Tony has had fun up until this season.

The last half of Troy's career wasn't as much fun period because we weren't winning championships. It was a slow slide to mediocrity.
