I think it's totally reasonable to think we as fans do have valuable input and ideas about running a football team. There are members of this site who seem very intelligent and knowledgeable.

So, if you were a GM of a football team would you ever read a fan forum like this one, or would you think it would be a waste of time? Would your ego get in the way?

Most of this site is full of nonsense.

No. An NFL general manager builds a roster through the draft and free agency, negotiates player and coach contracts, manages the salary cap, and organizes the football operations staff. A GM takes input from the head coach and makes final decisions based on that input. They oversee scouting and evaluate player transactions both within and outside the team.

Reading fan forums would be an activity either an owner would indulge in or someone an owner would appoint to investigate. It would allow an owner to gauge public opinion about the team or the NFL as a whole. An owner can then decide to act or not act on such knowledge concerning marketing or merchandising opportunities.

All of the above is why Jerry Jones fails both as a GM and does not maximize the profitability of his gigantic money-making enterprise.

One more thought. Jerry Jones has squatted in his self-appointed position for so long that it has somewhat blurred the distinctive differences between an owner and GM for observers. It may be true that few uniquely qualified people can optimally do both, in football or similarly for other professional team sports. However, that does not apply to Jones. Never has. Never will.

I can't see a GM having the time or interest in perusing fan forums. Oh, except for one.

Nah, the Will McClay’s of the world and their staffs have forgotten more football knowledge than anyone here possesses. Why would they listen to some couch potatoes who’ve never played at the professional level or been involved on a day to day basis evaluating talent? If I was an owner and my GM was getting advice from social media I’d fire him.

Hell to the No.

Seriously, just read some of the posts.

It would be like working for a bipolar GM who makes decisions purely on last week's Wins or Losses.

Yes, I would have an assistant help with reading the posts as I do believe there can be something to gain by it. After all, it's the paying customers ie fans that support me and my career, so yes. Dang right it has value. Get the pulse in real time weekly, at least. Either before or after a game, Monday morning I'm in there before practice in my office with my assistant reading posts. To me, it's negligence not to see what our customers are saying. It's like getting feedback. I like the idea.

If anything it will get a chuckle out of them. But what if they can learn just one thing from the fans? I think it matters. They/we are the paying customers.
