I'm afraid Jerry bypassed scouts' opinions re: Roy Williams trade ..?

Could you give us some examples of past trades for a high profile wide receiver in midseason?

Chris Chambers, midseason for San Diego last year. Next.

Maybe, just maybe, some of you that want to put the value of the trade out there after 8 games could wise up and realise that you don't know, and can not know, the value of that trade until RW has played at LEAST 2 full seasons with Tony Romo.

The deal was not made for JUST THIS YEAR. It's a long term investment. To try and pin the value, or lack there of, on the deal after 8 games is pretty stupid.

Why has no one pointed out the OP has no idea what the scouts or anyone else for that matter said concerning Williams.

Making premises off bad assumptions is fun and all....

Didn't San Diego give up like a second day pick?

High profile is debatable in this case, but let's run with it anyway. Looking at Chris Chambers stats he had 35 catches for 555 yards and 4 touchdowns in 10 games with San Diego after the trade. Learning the system going through training camp this year has netted him 30 catches for 412 yards and five touchdowns.

It doesn't appear that learning the system has helped Chris Chambers production in San Diego.

Obviously they didn't give up anywhere near as much as we did for Roy Williams, and for me it makes it all that much more troubling that Jerry's trade has netted less results for more compensation.

Thanks Jerry.

Everyone has their opinion and I think it is a good trade. Who do you tihnk we can get in the draft who can come in and has the experience that Williams has. Williams has been productive before and is young. Austin and Williams will be good for years. Crabtree, if he comes out will not get to where the Cowboys pick and who knows if he will be good. We already had a 3rd from the Browns so really in my opinion, we only gave up a first and low one at that to the Lions.

Hey Dadymat, I know I'm picking at scabs ... it's a bad time for this thread, like wishing we hadn't burned a 4-pick on Stanback.

And yes Rocyaice, Henson in the eyes of one scout was better than Brady anyway. It was freaking Jim Garrett (another long-time mistake of a scout for the Boys, Jason's dad) who proffered that, to paraphrase: "Drew Hensen had more makeup/potential than Troy Aikman." ... And so because of Jim Garrett's advice, Jerry traded a three-pick to Houston for Hensen. I have yet to read of any great draft pick of the Boys who the elder Garrett was either the discoverer or was the advocate. Jim Garrett was in that groups of scouts who either sucked, or couldn't make their voice heard above Larry Lacewell, who maybe in turn couldn't be heard above the prejudices/vanity of Jerry, who was and is the de facto GM, when in fact he's done nothing. (Didn't I read Parcells left because of Jerry's GM fantasies ??)

Parcells used to say, you are what you are. And that's mostly in scouting personnel, because that's the difficult thing. Finding good NFL coaches is the easier thing.

Are you comparing Williams to Stanback? Dude, Stanback sucks. He has done little to nothing. Unfortunately, Minnesota took the guy I wanted just one pick prior, Brian Robison. I have no issue with taking Stanback....I was pissed when we wasted a 4th on Skylar Green. I never liked him at LSU and I didn't like him in Dallas. I also was pissed about Bobby Carpenter, cause I never liked him at OSU, and he has stunk it up in Dallas.

Williams is getting wide open in every game, but Romo isn't finding him. Instead he waits till Williams is covered then throws the ball, and Roy has to make an acrobatic catch.

I beg to differ.

I watched the Ravens game and noticed the same thing Deion and Marshall pointed out. "It doesn't look like the Cowboys receivers are doing much to help out Tony Romo." He wasn't getting much separation, at all.

I thought at the time that we gave up too much, especially considering there's a chance we could have gotten him for nothing but $$$ in the offseason. Yeah, I know people insist he'd be franchised, but I'm not so sure a team in such a disastrous state would want to dedicate so much money to two WRs.

Personally, I don't think WRs win you anything anyway. Who are the great star WRs on the current best teams in the league?

Tennessee -- nobody.
Steelers -- Ward.
Panthers -- Smith. (Okay, there's one true game changer.)
Giants with Plaxico gone -- nobody.

But that said... Roy is a very good WR with seemingly a great attitude, and I really like him. He'd produce fine if we made a real effort to get him the ball. Right now IMO he's third behind TO and Witten, and there simply aren't enough footballs to go around.

So it's way too early to call him or the trade a bust.

I guess I don't get someone coming into the kitchen after the meal is less than half way prepared and declaring it a disaster.

Roy was wide open on a few occasions, but Tony never looked his way.

IMO, the biggest issue with our offense is Gurode. His early, late, or errant snaps are destroying the timing of our plays. We need to draft a Center who can either push Gurode to improve on his weak areas, or even take away his job.

He's average or slightly above.

Roy Williams was the biggest midseason trade in history that I can recall.

He's a bigtime receiver. Thats the least of my worries.

Roy Williams, like all of our receivers, just don't get enough passes in their direction.

We can agree to disagree.

Vincent Jackson may be average or slightly better -and he is way better than Chambers.

Welcome to the forum, Joe Gibbs. :laugh2:

The picks don't mean anything. If you look at our best players the majority of them weren't 1st round picks. Though TO wasn't our pick he was a 3rd rounder. Witten was a 3rd rounder. Barber was a 4th rounder I believe. Bradie James was a 4th rounder. Romo undrafted. Gurode was a 2nd rounder. I'd be more worried about losing our 2nd,3rd and 4th round picks than I would the 1st rounder. Especially next offseason with so many undergrads coming out.

This early. Williams came over mid season and didn't work with Romo for a couple of games, is still learning the playbook etc............

Judge the trade a year or two from now.
Williams is a top 20 wr in this league and is better than anything the Cowboys would be looking at in the first round.

I say you can judge the trade immedietly after this season is over.

RW was going to be a cowboy next year no matter what. The big question is was it worth it to bring him in a few months early.

We'll find out on super bowl sunday.
