I'm concerned officials are applying a different standard to our OL

Due to reputation, in starting to wonder if we aren't scrutinized more heavily by officials. Because of how good our OL has been for several years now, either to "even things up" or because they figure we MUST be holding more than other teams, we are being watched with a microscope.

Yes, some of the holds are obvious. Many however, like Tyron's on the TD, happen EVERY SINGLE SNAP and rarely get called.

We have been called for 16 holds compared to 6 for our opponents. Looking through them, only 5 all year have appeared egregious and worthy of note. The rest are your standard inside the shoulder pads/holding on for half a second too long that happen every down at every level of football.

Moreover, Washington had four egregious holds (that I noticed) on par with Collins second quarter takedown of Kerigan that we're not called. Two happened literally feet from an official.

The discrepancy is just getting hard to play off as coincidence, and there's simply no way Tyron Smith and Zack Martin are holding more often or more egregiously than joe blow nobody from Saginaw State that Washington trotter out yesterday.

The Tyron "hold" was a textbook point of attack run block. Very similar to the holding penalty Frederick got I think vs the Rams. I didn't think those should be penalties. Both on scoring plays ironically. Hmmmmm....

Doesn't even stop there. The Prescott non call was shameful. I know it's unpopular or what have you to claim favoritism etc but this was a pretty blatant 1 sided game. Refs should be held accountable for nonsense like yesterday.

That's my biggest issue. Our "penalties" and questionable calls non calls almost always happen at critical times. Coincidence? Perhaps. But it's certainly, odd.

Two things should be considered on the subject, especially by anyone who has not played the sport:
  1. Offensive lineman grab jersey or shoulder pads during virtually EVERY block
  2. A defensive player engaged during a block will ALWAYS flow to the ball unless they have been completely fooled or lost track of the ball
Holding happens every play. It is blatant holding that officials should toss laundry on the field. Intentionally or not, some officials pick-and-choose what is considered a blatant hold--and sometimes the decision does not even resemble the established written rule.

I do think that affected it. In both cases, we ran right past the player who was held so the officials called it because it had a bearing on the play. I don't think either should have been called, but I can see why an official would feel the need to call it rather than a similar hold that had little bearing on the play.

In other words, if Smith had done the same thing on a play where Elliott wasn't running near the block, I don't think it would have been called. It's almost like, "Oh, you ran for a touchdown, so that hold has to be called. Doesn't matter if we normally wouldn't call it."

Opposing teams have gone 16 quarters without a holding against us.

Meanwhile we seem to get one every big play

If I'm Garrett, I cut together tape showing the holds that are being called on us and the holds that are not being called on our opponents and ask the league why this disparity exists.

I think it's a very valid question. And one supported by statistical evidence.

On a side note, I'd also like to question that monumental and monumentally bogus 4th down pass interference call on Brown in the end zone that gift-wrapped a Washington touchdown.

I think there should be serious consequences for making a bad call like that. Especially on a 4th down play, and especially when it's giving a team the ball at the one yard line.

That could have been a huge blown call in that game, and the fact that it ultimately wasn't should not absolve that official from the proper ramifications.

That PI on Brown on 4th down was total garbage and it let the Commanders get back in the game.

I'd like to see that done, but do you really think that's the best use of a head coach's time?

Well, he should have people to actually put it together for him.
