I'm more stunned about Roy W than Owens...

I guess given that we all saw what a unique and gifted safety Roy Williams was in his first few years...and that he was our guy....I'm more bowled over by his release than that of Owens.

Owens came in as a hired gun...and had a bad reputation so, ya had to know it was always in the cards that he'd get released.

But Williams was our guy...he was supposed to have a long Ronnie Lott type career.

It's amazing how far he declined. Truly a shame.

Maybe overall I'd agree. But as for this offseason, more than likely Roy W wasn't going to be back, so that doesn't come as a surprise to me at all.

Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long. I expected a long career and him walking away from the game always a Cowboy. But the way his play has slipped it was clear it was time to move on.

The cuts look to be about money actually, more than anything. It makes no sense for Jerry to make this move now, especially after what he was saying prior. I think he saw what was happening in free-agency and the Ware contract is going to break the bank. He gets whatever was allegedly due to TO for the roster bonus and add it to Ware's signing bonus. The same thing is the case for Roy Williams. He already has to pay TO 9 million dollars in dead cash.

Well, I knew he would probably get cut...I guess the point I was trying to make was that at the high point of their Dallas careers, I never expected this day to come for Roy...I always expected it for Owens...

Agree with this thread. TO was hired gun, for a while, we considered Roy in the same way we look at Ware or Newman now. He was our best home grown talent. Now he's going to be a journeyman. Sad.

TO was not a hired gun, after signing this last contract. He was extended before his last contract was played out. Jerry had every intent for him finishing his career with the Cowboys and so did TO. That is why it was a 3 year contract, for his age.

He was a high profile player who had been at two teams before us and garnered a contract here. He played here for 3 years.

Hired gun.

Lets get real... Roy was ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL despite what defenders of all things cowboys would post trying to spin otherwise

Opposing teams loved when he was on the field, an easy exploit.

I think God had more to do with it than even the money.

Once he found God, that was it for him. He lost his heart for football.

Well done, you completely missed the point...so maybe you can go back and read what I actually posted and respond to that.

when he played OK he had Woody covering for him & basically coaching him on the field.

he never played like a top-8 pick, top-20 pick even. not by a mile.

they guy has always been overrated while being roasted. His few big hits probably contributed to this. anyone thinking he was the next ronnie lott had the annointing oil out before he even wore a star on his helmet obviously.

no surprise whatsoever

He was far better than "OK" in his first couple of seasons...his last few were awful.

But everyone's opinion is just that, an opinion. But my nickel bet is that most Cowboy fans thought he was going to be a main stay and a top flight safety after his first few years.

And again, just for the record, I'm not saying it's a surprise that he was released...I'm saying I'm a bit stunned that through the years his level of play fell off so much that it ended with him being released.
