I'm ready to eat crow on Garrett

I've been a Garrett hater.

I think I'm fully ready to eat my crow dinner in regards to Garrett. He may still have some hiccups in the future, but there is no denying what he has done to finally right this ship in Dallas.

I know many only want to credit Linehan and Marinelli and say they are the sole reason for this shift in our fortunes - but through articles and interviews it really does appear that the overall scheme of what our team has become rests on the red-headed one. And THAT will remain even if we lost Linehan or Marinelli next year. I definitely think we stick to the heavy running plan from now on regardless of who calls plays. It's proven that it works. And Garrett is ultimately responsible for implementing this run-heavy strategy, whether it was pro-active or just getting out of the way of others to do so - he did good.

Others probably want to wait till the end of the season to prove we don't collapse again. I'm not scared of this as our team is full of fighters who don't quit, thanks to Red's RKG strategy. Only multiple devastating injuries will allow us to completely collapse again I believe. Now tis may happen as it has for several years now. But even if it did, it would be no fault of Garrett.

So I'm ready for Jerry to extend Garrett whenever he is ready to. Garrett has almost completed his on-the-job training phase and is now only going to keep getting better and better as a HC. I'm all for that.

Bet he gets extended during the bye.

I'd be all for that. He's been a little slow for most of our liking to get us to this point, but he has done it. Not sure any other coach out there could do the same with Jerry hanging all over him. And he is homegrown.

Doubt it. Jerry is going to let the season play out before making any moves. Let Jason just focus on the job at hand. But I agree with the OP; based on what we are seeing, he has more than earned the extension.

Technically, it really doesn't matter I guess when he extends Garrett as long as it gets done.

Another bonus for the Zone - with Garrett starting to come into his own is I've been seeing a bit more "Hostile" posts. Nothing like when he posted 100+ times a day like before, but definitely more than when Garrett was at his lowest point. More Garrett = more Hostile. Since, even though I don't always agree with him, I think he's a fantastic poster, and am glad when he is more active on here.

I'm a fan of this dynamic that we currently have more than anything else.

I think we're enjoying three coaches in their perfect role, doing a great job.

Linehan as an offensive coordinator - not a head coach.

Marinelli as a defensive coordinator - not a head coach.

And Garrett as a walk-around, overseer head coach - not a play-caller.

And I would be a big supporter of doing whatever it takes to ensure that all of those coaches stay in those roles for which they are best suited.

I tend to think Jason has the ability to work with Jerry and Jerry has a respect for Jason. I still find it intriguing that BP talks about working for Jerry as very enjoyable, he liked and still like Jerry a lot. I tend to believe what BP said when he made the comment people have the wrong impression of Jerry Jones.

I'll second that, more Hostile around is a great thing in my opinion.

I'd normally agree, but it's also possible that getting the coaching staff done ends up being helpful in getting some of our players under contract. For example. there's the story that circulated this week (unsourced) that R McClain would want to make sure our coaches are in place before extending. If Dez's camp feels at all the same way (they probably don't, but I'd imagine it'd be a plus for him), getting Garrett and the rest of the staff done means we can buy time to get Dez done if we want to be in position to use the franchise tag on Murray in a pinch. And it might just be that doing all those relatively big deals between whenever the season ends and the deadline will start to compress us in terms of negotiating time. If there's a framework for a deal for Garrett, Dez and/or some of the coaches, I can see it making sense to lock some of the deals down during the down week.

If for no other reason than it makes the franchise threat for Murray more believable. And some of the best leverage we have on him would be in the form of an immediate extension, anyway.

I agree. I think Jimmy Johnson was right in his view that being HC\OC would be too much for Jason and that Garrett would be better served to keep his focus on HC of the team.

Absolutely looks that way.

What would be the point in JJ doing it now? If JJ wants him to stay, he's not going anywhere. Say the Cowboys finish strong and make a play-off run, it would be foolish for Garrett to walk away from it just because he wasn't extended during the season.

I was never a Garrett hater. It's not about the coach ... it's about the players. Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 with lousy players. He won two Super Bowls with top notch players. Same coach.

Great post! It's working. That's all I care about.

I've already gained 20 pounds eating crow this year. I'm hoping to gain another 50.

It looks like the right coaching mix is in place that can work with Jerry (not easy to do). So continuity going forward is very important. Garrett and teh coordinators need to be extended, if at all possible.

He is one of my favorites, as well, even though, like you, we don't always agree.
