I've been a Garrett hater.

I think I'm fully ready to eat my crow dinner in regards to Garrett. He may still have some hiccups in the future, but there is no denying what he has done to finally right this ship in Dallas.

I know many only want to credit Linehan and Marinelli and say they are the sole reason for this shift in our fortunes - but through articles and interviews it really does appear that the overall scheme of what our team has become rests on the red-headed one. And THAT will remain even if we lost Linehan or Marinelli next year. I definitely think we stick to the heavy running plan from now on regardless of who calls plays. It's proven that it works. And Garrett is ultimately responsible for implementing this run-heavy strategy, whether it was pro-active or just getting out of the way of others to do so - he did good.

Others probably want to wait till the end of the season to prove we don't collapse again. I'm not scared of this as our team is full of fighters who don't quit, thanks to Red's RKG strategy. Only multiple devastating injuries will allow us to completely collapse again I believe. Now tis may happen as it has for several years now. But even if it did, it would be no fault of Garrett.

So I'm ready for Jerry to extend Garrett whenever he is ready to. Garrett has almost completed his on-the-job training phase and is now only going to keep getting better and better as a HC. I'm all for that.

Agree with you there regarding giving Garrett some credit as well.......I also was not in his corner this last 4 or so years. I thought he was trying to do too much for someone with no HC experience. I know I and many others wanted him & Jerry to get an OC to take control and a DC do his duties-----and for Garrett to take the Jimmy Johnson role of being the game manager/team morale booster. Nothing wrong with that. Finally it appears this has happened.

Being able to oversee the entire team and being the team psychologist (like Jimmy)....is his strong point. Also talent acquisition has improved greatly from prior to Garrett so you gotta give him some credit there too. I still would like to keep Linehan and Marinelli for several more years so Jerry better open up his checkbook on these guys----you have to credit them too and not just the system. I hope Jerry's only duty is to sign the checks.

I agree, but all the top HC who have been in this league you will find top coordinators on their staff. Like you I want Linehan and Marinelli here for the long haul and hopefully that will happen

What would be the point in JJ doing it now? If JJ wants him to stay, he's not going anywhere. Say the Cowboys finish strong and make a play-off run, it would be foolish for Garrett to walk away from it just because he wasn't extended during the season.

I suppose the numbers on the contract might look different after a playoff run.

He's proving me wrong. Can't lash at the HC when things aren't going well and then not give him credit when they do. If this current team is his vision for the Cowboys, I'm all for extending him and the crew asap.

Besides the winning, we're playing physical confident football. We have a true identity and its not pass happy, finesse. Couldn't be happier with that.

I will throw a spin out there its totally in my head so don't believe it.

It is Jason that hasn't signed an extension, he really wants the Giants head coaching job. With the Giants sucking this year no way the keep Coughlin another year. Either that or he wants the SF job once Harbaugh leaves

In reality, I hope he stays another 5 years

I doubt it.

The Cowboys job is the highest profile HC position there is. I don't see him wanting to downgrade unless it's for a ton more money. And Jerry can outpay anybody if he really wants to. And Jerry really wants him. He has no interest in starting over again.

I am not quite ready to eat crow just yet, although I am getting close to warming up the grill. Garrett has made too many mistakes the past three years for me to just completely disregard them. I will buy in completely when and if we have success in the playoffs.

I'm a fan of this dynamic that we currently have more than anything else.

I think we're enjoying three coaches in their perfect role, doing a great job.

Linehan as an offensive coordinator - not a head coach.

Marinelli as a defensive coordinator - not a head coach.

And Garrett as a walk-around, overseer head coach - not a play-caller.

And I would be a big supporter of doing whatever it takes to ensure that all of those coaches stay in those roles for which they are best suited.

This is a perfectly accurate post.

Jerry is the (the dynamic you speak of is his) Puppet master of these puppets.

I guess we can make do with one 'Eating Crow' thread a week. Infinitely better than the alternative!

You guys may need to bring more sauces.

I tend to think Jason has the ability to work with Jerry and Jerry has a respect for Jason. I still find it intriguing that BP talks about working for Jerry as very enjoyable, he liked and still like Jerry a lot. I tend to believe what BP said when he made the comment people have the wrong impression of Jerry Jones.

people who know jerry like him alot. coaches whom he respects are treated very well and listened too. jerry has alot of respect for garrett and thats why i think he will get a nice extension and should

I'll bet Jerry is glad he has your blessings.

J/K glad to see you come around. Even if it's to what you once considered the dark side.

Recipee for quality crow:

Ingredients
add to shopping list
  • 1 frying crow, weighing no more than 3 pounds, skinned and cut up for frying
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bay leaf, crumbled if dried, chopped if fresh
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano or 1 teaspoon dried 6 juniper berries, crushed
  • 6 coriander seeds, crushed
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Olive or peanut oil (or a combination), for frying
  • Parsley or fresh oregano sprigs and 1 1emon cut into wedges, for garnish

Preparation

One: Wash the bird and pat dry. Put them in a large non-reactive glass or stainless steel bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, wine, garlic, onion, bay leaf, oregano, juniper berries, coriander seeds, and a few liberal grindings of pepper. Whisk until well-mixed and pour over the chicken, fuming the bird until it is uniformly coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate, marinating for 2 hours or overnight.

Two: Drain the bird, pat dry, and sprinkle liberally with salt. Spread the flour on a plate or place it in a paper or large Zip-lock plastic bag. Fill a large cast-iron skillet with enough olive or peanut oil (or combination of both) to come halfway up the sides, about 1 inch deep. Over medium-high heat, bring the oil to 375°F (hot but not smoking).

Three: Beginning with the dark meat roll the bird in the flour or drop it a few pieces at a time into the bag of flour, close the top, and shake until it is coated. Shake off the excess flour and slip the bird into the hot fat

Four: Fry until the bottom is sealed and beginning to color, about 4 minutes. Turn, and brown the second side. Reduce the heat to medium (325°F) and fry, turning once, until the bird is cooked through and golden, about 15 minutes more.

Lift the bird from the fat and drain well on a wire rack. Transfer to a platter and garnish with the sprigs of herb and lemon wedges and serve at once.

If the Cowboys keep playing the way they are and make the playoffs I'll eat a big plate of crow on Garrett. I may be eating a lot of crow this season so if anyone could recommend a good marinade I would appreciate it.

Technically, it really doesn't matter I guess when he extends Garrett as long as it gets done.

Another bonus for the Zone - with Garrett starting to come into his own is I've been seeing a bit more "Hostile" posts. Nothing like when he posted 100+ times a day like before, but definitely more than when Garrett was at his lowest point. More Garrett = more Hostile. Since, even though I don't always agree with him, I think he's a fantastic poster, and am glad when he is more active on here.

I 1000 percent agree regarding Hostile.

Hostile has to be feeling pretty good right now knowing that if the season keeps going this way he won't be having to tear down all his Jason Garrett Fatheads.

I always appreciated Hostile's perspective. Not sure why he ever left or was pushed away...

I'd normally agree, but it's also possible that getting the coaching staff done ends up being helpful in getting some of our players under contract. For example. there's the story that circulated this week (unsourced) that R McClain would want to make sure our coaches are in place before extending. If Dez's camp feels at all the same way (they probably don't, but I'd imagine it'd be a plus for him), getting Garrett and the rest of the staff done means we can buy time to get Dez done if we want to be in position to use the franchise tag on Murray in a pinch. And it might just be that doing all those relatively big deals between whenever the season ends and the deadline will start to compress us in terms of negotiating time. If there's a framework for a deal for Garrett, Dez and/or some of the coaches, I can see it making sense to lock some of the deals down during the down week.

If for no other reason than it makes the franchise threat for Murray more believable. And some of the best leverage we have on him would be in the form of an immediate extension, anyway.

The only player I think extending Garrett will have a direct impact on the negotiations is Rolando McClain. He was quoted recently as saying he wants to see what happens with the coaching staff before he agrees to resigning. Dez and Demarco are seeing dollar signs right now and given the cap situation, it may be difficult to keep both of them. Here's hoping they can figure out a way to get both deals done.
