I do think that Stephen will do well when Jerry hands him the reigns... but in the meantime, I feel like the team of Jerry/Stephen is a very good one.

Stephen is more low-keyed and seems to like solid football moves, while Jerry is the risk taker who likes to try to strike oil. Together, I think they can find a balance that will work very well. Particularly since Jerry seems to be truly listening to his oldest son more and more.

The combination of Jerry learning from his mistakes and Stephen with his more traditional football views appears to be finally starting to take hold at Valley Ranch. The solid football moves are coming more and more frequently.:)

I don't think Stephen played a role in Owens being cut. I think it was probably more Garrett and even then I'm not too sure Garrett went out to complain to Jerry, but they probably did meet and talked about Owens to some degree and Jerry probably gauged that Garrett didn't like Owens. I do agree with you that I think the release was a horrible move. But, I'll try to move on.

Anyway, Stephen is a real keeper. He's been pretty much quite masterful of Cowboys' contracts. The only contract that they signed that I truly think they wish they could have had back was probably Larry Allen's. He was starting to age and had ankle problems and kind of did his own thing and when Parcells came here he wanted to release him, but the Cowboys couldn't because of his contract.

It's not to say that they didn't have players they paid good money to not work out. But Allen was the main guy I can think of that the team wanted to cut and couldn't because of his cap hit. The other guys who didn't perform to their contract (i.e Roy Williams, Marco Rivera, etc) they basically cut them with little cap reprecussions. You could point to Owens' release as it was a $9.6 million cap hit, but he was an $8 million cap hit if he played and IMO, he did play up to his contract for Dallas.

Dallas went from cap hell in '00 to being one of the very best cap managing teams today. I tell people all of the time, I've very against nepotism, but Stephen has proven to me that he has earned his position.

I'm also impressed with Stephen, but I've always wondered why Jerry Jones, Jr. is not more involved in decision making and negotiations. Junior's role seems to be less than not only Stephen, but also that of daughter Charlotte, who is very active in the community relations side of the organization. I read a lengthy article about her and was very surprised at how involved she is with important team operations, but I barely hear a peep out of Jerry, Jr.

I like Stephen, he'll be a great owner and GM. And thank GOD he convinced his dad to get rid of Owens. After Jerry's cryptic message saying we were keeping TO I was very disappointed. As I said before, it's like a huge weight has been lifted off this team. TO never belonged here. Stupid move. I hope something like this never happens again.

Interestingly, given Galloway's Parcells story, I remember hearing from a reporter who had interviewed him, that Parcells' opinion of Stephen Jones was through the roof.

He's a master of the salary cap and has the endorsements of Parcells and Jimmy, 2 of our 3 best coaches of all time.

This implies that there are intelligent "country bumpkin used car salesmen" floating about out there.

I think this is great news for Cowboy fans.

With Stephen, we will see much less drama and risk taken with players such as Pacman.
Will we see better play on the field? Who knows? We don't know anything about SJ except that he's supposedly good at the cap, and getting contracts under it.

Besides that, we don't know anything. Remember we cleaned house like this years ago with bad players, wouldn't draft Moss because in order to keep our religious Cowboys persona. Did it work? NOPE, no super bowls.

The problem isn't players, the problem starts with the coach, then the QB. If you have a great QB, you can win. But not if you don't have a great coaching staff as well, so keep dreaming.

People always like the unknown.

Would it have matter if he were here or not, we've not won **** in years, even before he got here?

IMO, we got lucky with Jimmy Johnson. This entire ownership sucks IMO.

I think his dad just finally started to listen to him. And the only luck I can think of with Johnson is all the picks we hit on. Pro Bowler after Pro Bowler no matter what round. He certainly didn't do that in Miami so you might have a point.

We'll see how long the SJ lovefest lasts after he fails to win the Super Bowl during his 1st preseason game.

Seriously, take all this love for #2 with a very large grain of salt. Its love for the backup QB.
  • Remember when Romo got hurt and some folks thought it was probably for the best so he could sit down and learn from BJ for a few weeks?
  • Remember Troy Hambrick's gaudy stats as Emmitt's backup?
  • Even MB3's reputation has suffered with some since he became the starter. Some folks already want him back in his prior role.
I am certainly not discounting the positives about SJ allegedly from Jimmy & Parcells. I'm not even saying he won't be good. I hope he is all that.

But we've never seen the guy as a starter which is a totally different ballgame. And we also know that fans will turn on you in a second. So enjoy the lavish praise SJ. When and if you get elevated to #1 the noneymoon will be short.

We didn't pass on Moss in order to keep our religious Cowboys persona.

One of Jerry's biggest mistakes. That offense would have been unstoppable. We got the whiner instead. Most wasn't 1/10 as bad as Pacman and we still signed him.

Its a damn good thing his last name is Jones or else he probably would have went the way of Ireland, Sporano, Payton, Parcells and so many others who jumped ship.

You mean guys that Jerry hired, did a great job here, and then went on to get promotions elsewhere because of their success here?

Yeah, steven would be just another quality guy who made a pit stop. Nobody unrelated would wait until Jerry has had his fill. Its probably gonna take the Grim Reaper to move that man out of his office.

And I don't know why I put Payton on that list, I really can't stand that guy.

Yes we did. And Moss proceeded to make a joke of our organization for years after that. I laughed and laughed.

Our religious persona had taken quite a hit. We actually passed on him to get it back. Michael Irvin blames himself to this day. Jerry Jones gave in to outside pressure, i.e. image/perception. He did the same thing with TO. I hope the results are better this time.

(Sorry about the TO reference.:) )

I hope the inheritance taxes doesnt end up getting Stephen and his siblings. It has gotten lots sports franchise inheritors including Jack Kent Cook's kids. In this case Jera paid 180 mil for franchise thats now worth close to a billion. Thats alota taxes to be paid when Jera kicks it.

at first i was looking forward to stephen possibly taken over one day

but if he was the one that thought cutting T.O. this yr was actually a good idea im no longer as sure about him as i was prior.

i still see him being good like i first pictured but my overall opinion of him has dropped some what to be honest. i still dont see him being a bad thing for this organization even though i like the team of him and jerry. they bring perfect balance to each other.

i never had a problem with jerry taking risk anyway. some have paid off some didnt. happens to every team, its the nature of the buisness

but the main reason why i never had a problem with jerry's risk taken is in most instances its low risk high reward type of moves. i dont mind those at all
