I was just thinking about this earlier.
In 2003 we had the best defense in the league, and not just statistically - we were actually pretty damn good. If you'll remember that year we lost to Tampa Bay 16-0 and New England 12-0. Our problem wasn't defense, it wasn't that our offense consisted of Quincy Carter, Troy Hambrick, Joey Galloway, Antonio Bryant, and a bunch of other average players.
But over the last two years we've gone about completely destroying the solid defense we had, and have gone from a fast ball-hawking team to a lumbering giant which at times can look good, but doesn't look so great on the deep balls and the end-arounds.
I can only imagine if we had been able to plug holes in our 4-3 instead of totally revamping it, yet still had worked on the offense like we have. This team would very much be one of the best teams in the league.
But maybe I'm dreaming. 2003's D was rooted to Darren Woodson, and last year we saw Dat get hurt ending his career. Not to mention in 2004 the defense got smoked over and over. I'm not sure what to think...it sure would've been nice had we been able to be so dominant on both sides of the ball.
