We Cowboys die-hards have suffered so much with the likes of draft busts for the DL, Taco Charlton, Trysten Hill, and Mazi Smith; many second round busts including CB Kelvin Joseph, TE's Gavin Escobar, Schoonmacher; lost high draft picks due to free agencies, rounds 1-4, Jordan Lewis, Tyler Biadasz, Connor Williams, Connor McGovern, Dorrance Armstrong, Chauncey Golston -- comp picks are inadequate compensation for sure, but think about it long and deep...

Where would be be, how much worse -- I contend a lot worse, without free agent signees Brandon Aubrey and Kavontae Turpin? These two guys have given the team a false sense of our standing, which is poor enough. Without them, we easily would have at least 2-4 fewer wins per year, as they are impact, elite players.

This is a team in need of impact players, a third rounder like Harvey Martin, 2nd rounders like Darren Woodson and DLAW, a 5th rounder like D. Bland, a free agent like Everson Walls. Big impact players are in great need to lift this team from mediocrity. Aubrey and Turpin alone can do only so much.

Some of these guys were given second contracts and are still playing just not here. Every team has busts. The eagles just traded a 4 year we I never heard of. Bigger question was why was taco ever considered by most teams to be a 1st round pick? That's the lesson they need to learn.

Where the Cowboys were drafting, there were no players left with 1st round grades. It happens every year.
TJ watt. That's a guy they should of take a flyer on just by name alone. But you know if they drafted him they would think that the defense is fixed and not get him any help. If you look at Seattle they signed DeMarcus Lawrence but he's not supposed to be the enforcer out there they've got Leonard Williams and Jarann Reed who is good.

The players from the past that you've posted that we needed, played in a different time.

Back then, you were able to develop players and keep them for atleast 7 to 10 years or more. Who's to say we would have been able to keep a Harvey Martin, Darren Woodson or Everson Walls in today's Free Agency period?

With that said, you asked how much worse would we be if we didn't have certain players? If we didn't have the quarterback and receivers that we have, we'd be 0-8 right now.

I think the front office has really missed a trick by not trading any first or second picks for proven quality over the years.

You look at the Eagles they got a blue chip wide receiver in AJ Brown for a mid first rounder. The Titans drafted a bust with that pick whilst Brown helped the Eagles win a Superbowl and play in another.

Rams went for Ramsey. Two mid-late 1st round picks and a 4th. Sounds a lot but the Jags drafted a Jag and a standard running back for a 1st team All Pro corner who helped the Eagles win a Superbowl.

I'm not upset at draft busts. It happens, even when at the time I may wanted another player.
What makes the draft busts hurt more is the lack of using free agency to get quality over quantity.

Signing 5 guys at 1 year deals ranging from 1-7mil, who don't make an impact or can't even play vs 1 guy at 10-15 mil who can actually play and not be a liability sucks.

For every Kearse that we find that plays well for a few years we mainly get guys that are liabilities or just aren't good enough to get snaps over the disappointing starter.

I think the Cowboys front office has done a great job of running this team into the ground.

DLaw has 19 tackles and 3 sacks.

Yes but I am more concerned with his low production. Having the "physical tools" but couldn't be highly productive in college should have been a red flag not to take him so high.

Thats the case for every team drafting in the 20’s. But when you opt for Taco Charlton over TJ Watt then this happens. Guess TJ didnt have a first round grade either but he seems to have worked out.
