Immobility 101

All this talk about Bledsoe's immobility makes me think we'll see a lot of screen passes. Julius will catch quite a few and some will go to Witten and Campbell if they stay in to block. I think these screen passes will work, but not for the reason you think they will. We probably won't see big yardage or many touchdowns.

So, then, why so many screen passes?

If the Boys run a lot of screens, the defensive linemen have to be aware of the possibility, it causes them to pause or move a little slower during their rush to the pocket. That extra fraction of a second caused by their delay looking for the possibility of a screen may be what an immobile QB like Bledsoe needs to go through reads and find his receiver. In other words, the threat of screens buys time for an immobile QB.

So, here's what I expect: a lot of screens. AND...and, this is important, a lot of screens even if they don't yield much yardage. The key to the screens will not be getting yardage, it will be slowing down the rush.

Screen are OK, but if we can't pass block, we're still toast. Also, with the zone blitz, teams don't care if you screen, play-action, or whatever, there are guys assigned to kill your QB, period:(

You have to stop them.

We just need to not be chicken--back it up, protect the QB, and throw the ball downfield.

If we can't do that effectively with the weapons we have, we don't deserve to win a game.

But if we go out there scared of their blitzes and their rush, then we may as well not show up. I say we take it right at them, and if we need to pull the string on a Screen pass, then we do it.

But I certainly would not do screens all game long, we're not good at them.

Well, you always have to "stop them"...but a zone blitz will only work against a screen if 1) it is called on the same play as the screen, 2) the same side as the screen, and 3) the blitzer recognizes the screen developing.

A screen can actually work well against a zone blitz since there is a hole where the ball is going.

If we can pick up the blitz a few times and burn em for big plays, and Jones can burn the rush with draws, teams will back off

But I think we'll get good at them. Bill knows how to slow a defense...and this is a good way to do it. Julius will catch at least 50 balls this season, I'd bet.

My prediction: about 5 or 6 screens a game...just enough to slow the rush.

Julius has no hands

He doesn't? How does he hold the ball? I thought stickum was illegal! To think, we wasted a 2nd rounder on a running back with no hands!

You are right about the screen and it's effectivness on slowing down blitzs etc. But we cannot afford to lose yardage on a busted up screen-- however; if could pull the screen off, we would be one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

With the speed that we have in the RB department, we could quickly run off 20 and 30 yards at a time.

Also, you pointed out breaking the blitz with a draw--I just think that that point is a great one--if we catch them on a blitz with a great kick out block, preferably to the right side, then we could scare the HELL out of San Diego.

Isn't the Dallas motto....."We don't need no stinking screens?" :p:

All seriousness aside....Parcells sat the offense down to teach them about the screen and everybody started talking about doors and movies and computers and TVs and windows. Everything but football. The Dallas O couldn't sell a screen to their own mothers. They couldn't sell a screen in the middle of a West Nile Virus epidemic. They couldn't sell a screen to the local 30 movie cineplex.

Not gonna happen! :D

Dallas will use roll outs as well with Bledsoe, according to Bill he feels Bledsoe can move around and watching him in the pre-season I agree he is not as much of a statue as some would like us to believe

He opened mmy eyes in that last game, I was like whoa, where'd the 23 yo Bledsoe come from. Dont know what he ate for breakfast that morning, but make it a tradition. And hell, publish it, I could use that type of energy, I am getting old and tend to stay put in one spot longer then I ever used to.

I'll never confuse Bledsoe with a running QB but he is able to move around in the pocket and I'm sure Dallas will run some roll outs with Bledsoe to help counter blitzes from time to time but it is no secret that upfront protection is a must for Drew.
