Open mouth, change feet. Point blank, you were dead wrong as usual.

Here is a list of all Guards ever drafted. Who is that in 1967 from Texas A & I?

Here is a list of all Tackles ever drafted. Upshaw was drafted in 1967. Scrolling down to 1967, what name is conspicuously absent among Tackles?

Here's his player profile on Pro Football Reference again. How come it doesn't say Tackle anywhere?

So you're telling everyone here that a guy who never played Tackle in the NFL in his entire 15 year Hall of Fame career, was drafted as a Tackle, but there is no evidence anywhere to show this, and NFL content sites, including the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where it says "played Guard exclusively," are all wrong?

No, it's just you.
You make this too easy. You keep putting up his pro stats because you think everyone here is too dumb to see that you are avoiding the original premise of my post.

From Answers.com:

Although he did not especially care for the contact and violence of football, Upshaw decided to try out for the football team at Texas A&I, in the hope of translating his natural athletic ability into a scholarship. The plan worked. The minute coach Gil Steinke saw the powerfully-built Upshaw, he said, according to the Hartford Courant, "Get a uniform on him." Three days later, Upshaw had his scholarship. By this time, Upshaw had begun to grow, and he continued to grow throughout college, reaching an imposing 6' 5" and 265 pounds by his senior year.

Playing center and tackle, Upshaw had a stellar career at Texas A&I. He was named First Team All-Lone Star Conference and received honorable mention Little All-America from the Associated Press in his senior year. Pro scouts projected that Upshaw would be selected in the third round of the 1967 National Football League (NFL)-American Football League (AFL) draft. He performed so well at the Senior Bowl, the Coaches All-American Bowl, and the College All-Star game, however, that he quickly came to be considered one of the top linemen available. The Oakland Raiders of the AFL selected Upshaw in the first round, making him the 17th player chosen overall in the entire draft.
All-Pro Guard

As a rookie for the Raiders, Upshaw was switched to the guard position. His combination of speed, strength, and mobility quickly made him the prototype for the next generation of NFL guards. Upshaw's impact on the field was immediate, as the Raiders made it into the playoffs in each of his first three seasons with the team, and 11 times overall during his career, which lasted from 1967 until 1982. Three times during that span, the Raiders won the AFL (later the American Football Conference {AFC}) championship, and in two of those seasons, 1977 and 1981, they won the Super Bowl. Upshaw was the only pro football player to play in the Super Bowl in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

This thread is not accurate. In 1988 Cadigan and Moore were drafted as Tackles.

The very first Draft, held in 1936 had 3 guards taken at picks 7, 8, and 14.

In 1947 two were taken at picks 3 and 16.

In 1960 three Guards taken at 7, 14, and 16.

In 1966 two Guards were taken at 2 and 5, the second was John Niland by the Cowboys.

In 1967 Gene Upshaw, a Hall of Famer was the 3rd Guard taken at 17. Guards also taken at 9 and 12.

In 1975 at 3 and 13 two Guard taken.

In 1976 at 14 and 15.

In 1977 the 2nd was taken at 18, the first at 14.

In 1982 Hall of Famer Mike Munchak was taken at 8, and another Guard was taken at 17.

I sent this info to the OP last night but I guess he missed it. Eatman is completely wrong if he said this.
Thanks for that, Hos, and welcome back.

So now Hines Ward was drafted as a QB because in college he played QB? Great lack of logic.

1998 3rd round.

You need to answer the question about the taste of feet, you're the only one chewing on any.

He was drafted as a tackle (his primary position in college), but expected to be a guard (per Al Davis' plan).

Both of you can keep banging your heads against the wall however.

Don't mind me.

No, he wasn't. Regardless of what he played in college he was drafted as a Guard, and any draft site is going to show that and his player profile is too. As I posted above Hines Ward was not drafted as a QB, his primary position in college. What they played in college has nothing to do with how they are drafted. He was drafted as a Guard.

Let me add, all of this is irrelevant to the point of the thread that 2 Guards have never been taken before pick 18 in a Draft. Clearly not true whether anyone wants to delude themselves about Upshaw or not. That bit of info was nothing but a continuation of that posters incessant attacks which should not be allowed. He basically only responds to me wanting to stir up crap.

And if anyone wants to point out Hines played WR and RB too, switch the logic to Pat White, Todd Chrsitiansen (FB at BYU, drafted a TE) or anyone you want.

Yes, he was. Hines Ward or Todd Christensen notwithstanding. You just refuse to admit that you passed out bad information, although your point overall was correct.

I wonder how he is second all-time in receptions in Bulldog history if, as you say, his primary position was QB? Was he throwing passes to himself?

Get ready for it. Both will be available at #18, and we're not taking either of them.

Now...how does your foot taste?

Wow. Answers.com. Great football reference.

Let's see what the Raiders actually thought.

"The Raiders drafted Upshaw in 1967 largely to combat Buck Buchanan, the Kansas City Chiefs’ massive defensive tackle. Upshaw was 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, exceptionally tall and a bit lean for an interior lineman. But he not only neutralized Buchanan, he became a pillar of the Raiders’ offensive success for 15 seasons. With Upshaw at left guard and Art Shell at left tackle for 14 of those seasons, the Raiders became a rare left-handed team, and both blockers wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

http://raiders.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/10121/gene-upshaw-remembering-a-raiders-legend/

Or this:

"The Raiders' coaching staff decided left guard would be Gene's best pro position and Upshaw won the starting job in his rookie training camp. Upshaw’s size, it was felt, would help neutralize the effectiveness of Ernie Ladd and Buck Buchanan, two huge defensive tackles in Oakland’s division."

http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.aspx?PLAYER_ID=220

Yes, that Hall of Fame.

Answers.com is a half step up from a Wiki reference. Someone's opinion, brought out as fact.

Of course he was switched from tackle - it's what he played in college. But Gene Upshaw was drafted as a guard.

If you want to argue, go write the Oakland Raiders or the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We await their response.

So what we have learned is that Darren Woodson was not Drafted as a DB or S despite all publications and sites saying he was, and that being the position he actually played, all because he played LB in college at ASU. Therefore he was drafted as a LB.

And Rayfield Wright wasn't drafted as a TE despite all evidence saying we did, and that he was, and that was where Landry first played him. Apparently we drafted him as a Power Forward because that is what he played in college.

It's too bad that Pat Riley decided not to play football, we really needed a Shooting Guard, and too bad Carl Lewis decided not to as well because we needed a Long Jumper.

it will not happen this year.

Last year they said David Decastro was the best guard prospect in a decade and he went 23.

I would call it a lock that both of them will be there by 18 except for the fact that this draft is so weak it might push Warmack up. Cooper will definitely be there at 18. No way 2 are taken. Book it.
I'm not sure it will happen this year either.

I think the TE is going before 18 and there's a chance a couple of QB go as well. Austin for sure is going before 18.

But for perspective both Guards have a higher prospect rating than DeCastro did last year.

Just because a few exaggerators pumped DeCastro up even further than his lofty ratings does not mean that's how he was actually rated by top analysts and GMs. Even guys like like Mayock and Kiper mocked Decastro at 21st and 20th come draft day...not 8th or 12th.

Again, I don't think it'll happen, but just giving some perspective vs last year.

Fellas, I was watching a podcast on Dallascowboys.com and I think it was Nick Eatman that said that 2 guards going by the 18th pick has never happened in the history of the NFL draft.

So he seemed to think all the talk of Cooper and Womack being gone is complete BS, like many had DeCastro going in the top 10 and he didn't go until the 20s.

So, do yall buy this or will both guards be gone setting a new NFL record?

It's been said there are 2 things you can count on in life. Those two are Death and taxes. I'm throwing in change. I'm thinking one goes early and one is left.

You've said this multiple times. What makes you so sure about this? I'd be shocked if we passed on either guy (barring a stud DT falling to us).
