INCENTIVE (AND BACKUP RBS) COULD DECIDE GIANTS-'BOYS
By PAUL SCHWARTZ
There's a school of thought in the NFL this time of year that when measuring incentive, always go with teams fighting to squeeze into the playoffs over teams already in and seeking to better position for a lengthy postseason stay.
History says teams hoping to improve their seeding do not play with the same abandon as teams hoping to extend their season. The GiantsNew York Giants
hope that is not the case tomorrow night when they face the Cowboys in a prime-time NFC East clash at Texas Stadium that contains important but different rewards for the two sides.
"Everyone is talking about how desperate the Cowboys are," linebacker Antonio PierceAntonio Pierce
said, "but we are desperate to get this win to settle some things as far as goals we set for ourselves."
To designate the Giants as desperate is not honest, though they will play without leading rusher Brandon JacobsBrandon Jacobs
, who has been declared out with a knee injury. They have already clinched the division title and need one more victory in the last three games to wrap up the No. 2 seed in the NFC, which comes with a bye in the first found of the playoffs then a home game in the divisional round. As the front-runners in the conference, the Giants want more, as the No. 1 seed ensures the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Earlier in the week, Justin Tuck said he wasn't sweating where the Giants will play in the playoffs, pointing to the "road warrior" success they had last year in winning postseason games in Tampa, Dallas and Green Bay. Of course, he'd rather be at home, but it's not a necessity.
Does that sound like desperation?
