On the 2nd leg of the Fed Ex playoffs at Olympia Fields we had the most bizarre finish I can ever recall with the #1 and #2 current golfers in the world.

Dustin Johnson who had won last week in the 1st round of the Fed Ex Cup with an astounding 11 shot victory with 30 under par was leading most of this final round yesterday. He begun with birdies on 3 of his first 4 holes to take a 3 stroke lead.

Rahm who begun the day 3 strokes back begun tearing up the back nine on his way to a 64 , the lowest score of the week on a brutal course that only left 5 players under par. Rahm who only had one bogey all week due to a 1 stroke penalty the previous round from forgetting to mark his ball on the green before picking it up was left wandering if that penalty might be difference as he waited for everyone to finish after posting 4 under.

Johnson had dropped back to 3 under needing a birdie on the last 3 holes to force a playoff . On #17 his second shot went in the bunker, his save left him 5 feet to save par which he made. Which left a difficult #18 needing birdie to force playoff.

His tee shot was right in the tall grass of the rough and while his approach did find the green left him a treacherous long downhill breaking putt needed to extend play. He took additional time lining it up with his brother as caddie. Then he holed the 45-footer as we all watched it slowly curling and feeding to the cup hitting the pin square on dropping in the cup for the most dramatic putt in years on the tour.

This forced the playoff with Rahm. On the 1st playoff hole Rahm drilled an impressive drive Just off the fairway. Johnson went left and his hit a tree knocking him back in fairway but much further back. Both hit the green on their approach but neither looked like birdie opportunities.

Rahm was in 3 putt territory and would putt first. It was 65 feet away and coming downhill would break two different ways before approaching the hole. This putt was even more dramatic than Johnson’s on 18 as it snaked it’s way in. Johnson’s putt fell inches short and it was over.
